Indeed it does. When one of the keys on my laptop popped off I tried for hours to reattach it to no avail. Taking it to a repair clinic I was told that they couldn't reattach a single key either and that a new keyboard would have to be ordered and installed at a cost of almost half the cost of the original laptop purchase price. Fortunately, the laptop was still under warranty so the repair was made in a few days for free.

So, where does this leave you? If your computer is still covered by warranty contact Sony Customer Service. If the warranty is expired, a new USB keyboard can be purchased very inexpensively wherever computers and computer accessories are sold.

How to use Alt Car key?

I am guessing the Vaio you have is a Canadian model, which has alternate keyboard drivers for English and French. On these models, it seems the alt car key only works with the French keyboard (durr). To switch, press the LEFT control key and RIGHT shift key at the same time, then release. Now if you use the alt car key like the shift key, i.e. hold it down then press another key, you should be able to access the pink characters. To return to English keyboard, press left-ctrl and right-shift together again.

My shift keys do not work on my sony vaio. I have a VGN-N130G. Neither shift key works, however, the CAPS LOCK works. It was fine yesterday. I did restart the computer and it did not fix the problem.

sad to say but if you want you can replace it with new one. or you can use a usb keyboard. or just let it be until some of the keys become defective. its your choice.

Spacebar key is stuck down on one side.

pop the space key off altogether using a screwdriver or any flat object, make sure the scissor clips that it connects to are not malfunctioning, you can install new clips, but popping it up and reattaching it should fix your problem

Sony VAIO keyboard probems - th5s is h6w it ty*es- i=5 m=0 *=p L=3 etc *3ease he3*

You have accidentally turned on the NumLock feature (numeric keypad simulation, you have the digits written on these keys in different color).

The key to turn it off (NumLk) is located in the upper right area of the keyboard, try hitting it alone, with Fn and with Fn + Shift, Ctrl or Alt., checking every time if the "numeric" keys came back to normal.

Hi my sony vaio vgn-sr13gn, shift key does not work at all. not even in Command promt. Both shift keys don't work. What can I do?

A friend of mine has the same problem and i stumbled on your question today. This problem occurred with the Vaio VGN-FZ11E, after very very modest usage, no scratches or damage visible whatsoever.

There's one option out there:

"I found that if you hold down both left and right shift key at the same time (did this for several seconds), it somehow solved the problem. Hopefully that fixed the issue. Also, go to control panel, click on accessibility options..in the keyboard tab, click on the settings buttons for sticky keys, filter keys and toggle keys and deselect the option to use shortcut..hopefully this will help you and other people that have had this problem."
Quoted from here

If that doesn't work, seems to me the remark of Benwabnick seems to be the solution, as posted below.

the contact underneath the shift key itself is starting to go bad. Its a common issue with sony laptops, the keys can wear out pretty quickly. You'll have to get another keyboard.

Where is the ''full stop'' on keyboard of the note book?

On the right hand side of the keyboard, the 3rd key to the left of the Shift key (counting the Shift key as the 1st key) and the comma key is the 4th key to the left of the Shift key.

How do I use the "AltCar" on my labtop?

Okay, I know this is an old question but when i searched for the same problem recently, it was the nearest I could find. So in case others are having the same problem:

The Vaio you have is a Canadian model, which has alternate keyboard drivers for English and French. The alt car key only works with the French keyboard (durr). To switch, press the LEFT control key and RIGHT shift key at the same time, then release. To return to English keyboard, press left-ctrl and right-shift together again.
