I can't get the handlebars to lock in to the forks, any ideas?

You haven't given me much to go on, but a common problem is to mis-identify where to tighten. There is a large nut (about 1-1/4 inch) that is the locking nut for the headset (which is where the bearings are that allow the fork to turn and steer the bike). This large nut does not tighten the handlebars. Rather, there is a long bolt that travels straight down through the handlebar stem. The handlebar stem is the bar that clamps to the middle of the handlebars and extends vertically down into the headset. At the bottom of the bolt (where you cannot see it) there is a wedge shaped nut. When you tighten this bolt the wedge nut jams itself inside the tube which is the top of the forks inside the headset, thereby locking the handlebar stem to the the forks. The head of the bolt you need to tighten can have a variety of shapes - could be an ordinary hex head, or it may require an Allen wrench (hex key). There are lots of different styles, but if you Google images of "handlebar stem" you will get the idea. good luck. Al K

T5 classic mudguard how to change one

Disconnect brake cable.
Remove handlebar headset top screws x 4.
Push speedo cable into fork leg to raise headset top.
Disconnect speedo cable and wiring plug.
Remove handlebar clamp bolt and pull handlebars up to remove and hang on cables.
Remove locking nuts and washers from top of steering column.
Get help to raise front end of scooter and forks will slide out. (Suggest doing this bit over sheets of newspaper to catch any loose bearings.)
Remove the three bolts holding mudguard to fork and slide up the column.
Do the above in reverse to refit.

How to change head set also replace front fork?

Loosen clamp at top of bike frame where seat slides in ...twist seat back and forth while lifting upward.......To remove ft. fork ..At handlebar assy.remove allen bolt..(some are hidden by rubber plug)..remove handlebar assy/remove large nut at top of frame where handlebar slides down in..
...twist and pull to remove front fork....some have upper and lower nut depending which bike.

My 98 dyna low rider I'm trying to remove and replace the fork lock cylinder and I have the and the lock works. I have removed the set screw and cylinder will only move out a little bit. Do I force it out...

You have to loosen the upper triple clamp pinch bolts and remove the upper triple tree and handlebars. Loosen the fork stem bolt and let the fork stem drop down approx. 5 inches. Then your lock will come out.

Note: On the left side of the steering stem there is a "half-moon" indentation that has been machined into the steering stem for the lock. Let the steering stem drop until this indentation is in full view.

Right out of the book.

Front forks loose

Without more info, I can't tell if you mean you have a loose head-set (that's the vertical tube that holds the bearings that turn when you steer), or if you have a mountain bike with springy front forks and the springy part is loose. If it's the springy part, you'll probably have to replace the whole front fork. If's it just a loose headset, you can tighten it pretty easily. Look at the top of the headset while you turn the handlebars back and forth (as if steering). Looking at the top of the headset you will see (from bottom to top) a knurled ring, a washer, and a large nut. The nut is a lock-not which is isolated from the knurled ring by the washer. The washer has a tab on the inside that prevents it from rotating. Tighten up the knurled ring by hand (you might have to lift up on the handlebars a bit to take the pressure off of it). Don't over-tighten the knurled ring or you won't be able to steer. Then tighten the lock nut with a wrench. Good luck

turn the handlebars all the way to the left and then turn the ky to the left position that says lock and then you can remove the key with the forks locked in that position.

Cant get the handlebars to stay in place

Usually on the bottom of the bolt going through the goose neck and into the fork tube, there is a nut with an angle on it. When you tighten the bolt it pulls the nut up with the angle on it locking it into place. Check to see if the lock nut is on the end of the bolt, or has fallen off in the goose neck.

Replace damaged front fork lock on a 1996 harley davidson FXDS-CONV.

Ok, this is how you replace the lock on the front end.

1.Loosen upper triple tree clamp pinch bolts. Remove upper triple clamp and handlebars.

2.Loosen fork stem bolt and let fork stem drop down approx. 5 inches.

Note: On the left side of the steering stem there is a "half moon" indentation that has been machined into the steering stem for the lock. Let steering stem drop until this indentation is in full view.

3. Use a scribe and remove lead plug. (there is a flat looking place below the key lock. The lead plug is underneath this and it hides a set screw. Dig the lead plug out to get to the set screw)

4.Unscrew the set screw

5.Insert key in lock and turn partially.

6.Wiggle lock and pull until enough of the lock comes out to get a grip with pliers or other suitable tool.

7.Rotate steering stem slightly, while pulling on lock until lock is removed.


There is an internal boss in the left side of the steering head opposite the external boss. The end of the lock fits into this internal boss.

There is a hole in the bottom of the lock into which the set screw fits. This hole must be at the bottom when the lock is installed.

When the lock is correctly installed, a forward-facing flat on the lock will fit against a flat inside the external lock boss and the face of the lock will be flush with the face of the external boss.

1.Steering stem should be in above position. See steps 1 and 2 above.

2.Grease the end of the lock (the part that goes into the internal boss) and slide lock into external boss.

Note: Steering stem must be in locked fork position.

3. Move steering stem into locked fork postition. Rotate steering stem sligtly, while fully installing lock.

4.use Loctite 242 (medium strength blue) and install set screw

5.Use key in the lock and tighen set scrw until lock begins to bind; then back set screw out 1/2 turn.

6.Pound in lead plug (or use a good quality sealant)

7. Install fork stem, upper triple clamp and handlebars.
