Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have a Maytag bottom freezer, Model MBF2256HEW. It is running too cold in the freezer (ice cream, for example, is hard as a rock), and not cold enough up top in the refrigerator. It does not seem to respond to adjustments using the temperature settings. What is going on? Just a thermostat?

First of all reset both of your settings to the middle. If there is a problem, adjusting the settings will not make any difference in temperature.

Check to see if the fans are running both in the freezer section and by the compressor at the back of the refrigerator. Check for excessive frost buildup on the evaporator (defrost problem). Check for frozen defrost drain (this could also clog air ducting to refrigerator section). Check for proper sealing of door gaskets. Check that the condenser (under the refrigerator) is not clogged with dust and hair.

What setting do I use to make the freezer freeze food

When you are freezing something, set your freezer on its highest setting. However, if you are going to leave your freezer empty for a long time, you should change the setting to a lower one. Here's a great tip for ice cream: place a tub of ice cream in a ziplock bag before putting it in the freezer; it prevents freezer burn. You know when your ice cream gets so cold, it's hard to scoop out? Doing this stops that, it's keeps the ice cream just soft enough for easy scooping!

Whirlpool GB2FHDXWB01 just started getting way too cold in the freezer. Ice cream is rock hard, seems to run all the time.

Most likely its the cold control located in the fresh food section...unless you have a dual cold control....

Frost is building up in bottom freezer. Appliance is running nonstop. I believe that the freezer drawer has been shut completely. Foods in refrigerator section are fine; foods in freezer section are...

Frost can build up for multiple reasons. Most common is the start os an iceblock. Other reasons can include condensation from door being left open or opening too much. It can also happen from backsplash from the inlet tube for the ice maker. If the fridge is running non stop. It sounds like the ice block is forming and the temps are not getting to the program temps. If at factory setting the freezer should be at or around 0 degrees and fridge should be between 42 and 48 degrees. Has the fridge shutdown at all to go into defrost? The defrost timer may have went out and is causing an iceblock. If there is an ice block always change bimetal/ defrost thermostat.

Why won't the freezer freeze the ice cream? It freezes around the outside of the cannister only.

According to White Mountain, this happens because the ice brine gets too cold. The procedure they recommend is as follows:
After you put your cream can in the tub and attach your crank or motor, fill the tub with ice and run for two minutes to cool the cream can. Then, put two cups of rock salt on top of the ice and let it continue to crank. After the ice level has dropped 2-3 inches, put more ice on top and another two cups of rock salt and let it continue to crank until the ice cream is done.

Maytag model number RSW2200E stopped making ice, water dispenser still works though

Hi: Maytags have issues with ice makers. But before you call service... Try setting your freezer colder. The ice maker is thermally protected so it will only make ice at 0 degrees F. Not just frozen, but 0 degrees. Ice cream should be rock hard. In the summertime this happens a lot. I just had to set my Amana colder, as the ice slowed in production. Give it 24 hrs to stabilize in temperature. Don't do the human nature thing and open it every hour to see if ice is made as you will just dump the cold air out. I hope this helps, Jeff.

Make ice somtime but leaks or act like its defrosing

Hi: The ice maker is thermally protectec. In other words the freezer has to be at Zero degrees. Not just frozen, but zero. Your ice cream should be rock hard. Before you call a service tech try setting your freezer colder. Wait 24 hours before a change. It's human nature to check on the icemaker from time to time, But don't keep opening the freezer to see if it's working. You'll just dump the cold air out and make matters work. I hope this helps. Jeff

My ice cream won't stay frozen in my freezer.

Hi: Meat and other frozen foods will be rock solid at 32degrees. Ice cream will be soft it needs 0degrees to be hard. It sounds like your freezer is above 0 degrees. You tried the adjustments. Make sure the coils on the bottom are clean. They will warm a ref if they are dirty. A coil brush from the hardware store or a air compressor (plan on dusting the house when done. Just vaccuuming the front isn't enough. That's an older model but one of the controls affects both the freezer and fresh food. When it's running turn one down; if it turns off the compressor it affects both. The other control is just an air balance, to direct how much air gets to each compartment. I hope this helps, Jeff

Frige is cold, freezer is cold & freezing . . . Ice maker not making ICE.

Hi: As we don't (as in I) know the actual temp. in the freezer, this is a simple and free try. Cold is cold. The temp in the freezer has to be 0 degrees to make ice. They are thermally protected. A good guess for temp. is your ice cream. Is it rock hard? A lot of refrigerator thermometers are inaccurate. Just try setting your freezer colder. Ignore human nature and don't check the freezer every 30 Min's. You will never get to 0 degrees. I hope this helps, Jeff

Freezer way too cold - ice cream hard as a rock

The freezer may get as low as -18 degrees F or 0 F this is the point when life and bacteria stops growing.
Ice cream shouldn't be that cold unless it is whipped with air.
