Question about Brother MFC-9840CDW Laser Printer

Open Question

My Brother MFC-9830 CDW printer said I needed to replace yello, cyan and magenta toner cartridges. I didn't do this straight away and then it started saying "drum error". I have replaced the colour toners, cleaned the carona wires and I am still receiving "drum error". I am totally unable to do anything ---- very exasperating.

First off, this is a comment from a random person who may or may not know ALOT about these printers and toner/printer design in general. All toners are not designed to the same specification. Toner is a combination of plastic "pigment" and iron like shavings to make it magentically attracted to the electrical charges within the unit. Different toners conform to different grades and mainly size of the particles within the blend. The manufacturer doesnt only recommend that you use their toner to make them money, yes of course it makes money, but its because when the unit is designed it is designed to use a certain grade of toner, trust me if you put the non-branded toner vs the branded toner under a microscope you would see quite a difference. Often the non-branded toner is much larger in particle size (obviousely because its cheaper to make at this spec). This causes a variety of issues from excess toner not being cleaned off of developer rollers, IDT rollers, or clogging of toner dispenser tubes in the unit and the micro filters contained at the toner dispenser assy and developer assys. Also as for the issue not changing when switching to dell branded toner - the dispenser tubes within this unit contain up to 500-1000 pages worth of toner, making no change in toner you make immediately visible. Also depending on the damage caused by the previous toner, it may not be able to be fixed until all the components in between the toner and final delivery (drum cart) are replaced. In this case more than likely the toner dispenser assy, all developer assy's, and drum cartridge need to be replaced, and than be sure to stick with factory branded toner :)

SOURCE: iP4300 only recognizes magenta OR cyan

1. Get compressed air
2. Run Printhead under HOT water, do not worry about contacts getting slightly wet.

3. Blow compressed air with straw attachment into screens where the cartridge nozzle sits on printhead. then let it sit and dry.

4. reinstall print test page

5. if this fails open paint/photoshop and print a page of the color that is not printing correctly. rinse and repeat until colors flow freely.

I have several ip4300s and I have yet to give up the ghost on a printer with a clog ujsing this method.

51.22 is a Magenta laser scanner error.
Try removing the magenta restarting the printer and reinstalling.
If that does not work you likely need a laser assm.
You might want to call a tech. to replace.

Purchase some printer cleaning paper (transparency sheets) to clean the printer's media path. Run through 10+ times if necessary.

Take out the magenta cartridge and clean the nozzels and contact and reinsert it. if the issue persists get a new genuine brother magenta cartridge

Using the same cartridges for the HL-4070CDW, I refilled the black yellow cyan and magenta cartridges. when I put them all back into the printer, the RED toner life end comes on saying that cyan, magenta,...


There's a window on each end of the cartridges and light shines thru to show when they're empty, your refill toner may not be the right density. If you put a small piece of electrical tape over the windows on the cartridge, the error will go away, but you have to watch print quality to change or add toner.

Try unplugging the printer for about ten to fifteen seconds; then replug.

This may clear the printer's memory about the low magenta. I had a similar thing with yellow, and when I replugged it stopped complaining about the yellow and told me that my cyan was out, and magenta low. I replaced the cyan, and voila! I can print!

Color cartridge


The Brother machine will not print if the message "Toner Empty X" ( X =C for Cyan, M for Magenta, Y for Yellow and K for Black) is displayed on the LCD. The empty toner(s) must be replaced in order to continue printing. Incoming faxes will be stored in the memory until the toner(s) is replaced.
