Question about Friedrich M18CF Split System Air Conditioner

1 Answer

My dads Friedrich floating air wall unit won't stop making a loud noise even though it is powered off. I tried to power it off but it will not stop making this noise, it has never done this and it always turns off with no after noise, it has now been running for hours while off, although it isn't working the way it would be if I turn it on. It just sounds like a motor or something is still trying to run. Any help, thanks!

It is possible it is the noise of refrigerant balancing when the compressor shuts off. Does the noise ever stop? Have you turned breaker off??

SOURCE: Friedrich air conditioning - inside unit ice build up

Hi, Reduced air flow, low on freon or being continuously run during cooler weather such as at night. Some people turn their thermostat on 60 thinking that it will help get it cooler faster. They freeze up at night and don't get a chance to thaw during the day. It needs set no lower than 75 or so. The evaporator may be dirty. Don't know a lot about your particular unit but if the outside unit has the compressor and refrigerant lines running to it, The large refrigerant line should sweat all the way to the compressor if its fully charged. Please rate me if I have helped. Good luck kstfas

SOURCE: Friedrich Mini-Split blowing fuse

Low voltage shorts can be a real pain to find!!! i would try a process of ellimination: first i would try to elliminate the thermostat. then id look for a wire that is vibrating on something in the cabinet.

SOURCE: compressor makes loud noise when it shuts off

If you know that the compressor is making the noise, I really believe you need to prepair to replace the the air conditioner. If under warranty it would be wise to contact the dealer for options.

SOURCE: squealing and sometimes doesn't blow cool

A squealing noise is most likely the bearings going bad in the blower motor. This will slow the motor down. If the blower is not operating at the proper speed this will affect the temperature pressure relationship of the refrigerant. This will cause the unit to put out the wrong temperature. Running the unit to long under these conditions can possibly cause further problems ( including a very high electric bill). I recommend that use do not use this unit untill it is repaired or replaced.
Good luck.....

Check if the full light is lit. If so check that the float switch is free.

On page 5 step 3 they discribe how the float switch needs to be free?

I have a frederick x star Its a wall mounted unit and is excessively noisy at the beginning of a cycle or start up it does not appear to be loose in its mounting though why is it making the noise

This often happens when units get a little age on them. But, they quiet down after 30 seconds or so. Be sure the unit is tightly secure in the window, as the vibration my be caused in part by the unit moving slightly in the window.

Hope this helps you and thanks for choosing FixYa.
