Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

At first my maytag rsd2400 refrigerator would not defrost. i replaced defrost heater. all was fine. now four months later it wont defrost again. i have tried to trouble shoot the three most common problems. Timer, thermostat, and heater. I cant seem to solve the problem. And so since having it appart to trouble shoot and defrost manually with water, a new problem has arrose. Now it will not cycle or shut off. it will shut off when i turn temp control to off only? Stummped!!!!!!

I have a Maytag PTB1953DR refrigerator, would the timer be shot again?

The timer should last a lot longer than that, but I have received bad ones right out of the box. Depending on model year, the full current of the compressor and the defrost heater are present in the defrost timer contacts. The defrost heater should be checked with a volt-ohm meter if continued icing takes place. The defrost heater will have a positive ohm reading if it is okay. If the meter reads infinity or 0.0 ohms, the heater is bad.

Defected DEFROST HEATER can cause frost build up on the panel at the back of the freezer, and freezer stop cooling and ice frozen on unit so air could not flow to refrigerator side.Water will coming out caused of unbalanced freezing, and causing the flooding of water in the floor. You must change this defroster heater assembly so it will works normal again..
Heavy Frost on the Coils
This is good! This indicates a defrosting system failure which is a simple control problem. It also means that the sealed system (compressor, evaporator coil, and all associated tubing) is fine as wine in summertime. Defrost system problems are easy fixes that anyone with a pulse can do with maybe just a little help from their friends. The problem will either be the defrost timer (or Adaptive Defrost Control board, if so equipped), the defrost thermostat, or the defrost heater. Coils in freezer section are a solid block of ice. Cleaned and melted ice but just happened again a month later. defrost cycle malfunction?

Yes. The most likely cause is a burnt out defrost heater (WR51X10101), located at the bottom of the cooling coils. The replacement heater may look different, but instruction included with heater cover that. I would suggest replacing the defrost thermister (WR55X10025) at the same time, located at the top of the cooling coils.

Not defrosting. I replaced the defroster timer circuitry and heater element last April. It worked for 3 months or so and started freezing again.

I have a side by side that frosts up in the middle back ofthe freezer and the frig part gets warm. I have $200 in it and still no resolution. Bought new in June '04. I defrost for 24 hours, turn it on and...

If you can locate the defrost timer and advance it to the defrost cycle you should be able to see the defrost elements glow behind the rear panel in the freezer. Do this before the freezer gets too frosted up. If you can't see the glow then there is a problem with the defrost heaters or the defrost thermostat. Unplug the frig and remove all the racks in the freezer. Remove the screws holding the rear panel on. Locate the two heaters and check the resistance. IF open, replace heaters. IF ok check resistance of the defrost thermostat. IF open when cold, replace defrost thermostat.
If replacing heaters always replace defrost thermostat at the same time. It will save you doing so at a later date
