Quick Tip: How to correctly shut your computer down

This may seem like a simple tip, it is, however it can cause many unneeded problems to your computer if you do not shut it down properly. Do Not shut down your computer by pressing the power button. Whether you have a PC or a laptop, don't use the button. When you go to shut your computer down go to start and shut down and it will shut off. If you do not do this correctly it doesn;t give your computer the proper amount of time to shut down, you can corrupt your Windows files and eventually have problems even booting your computer up. Simple solution that will avoid future problems! Hope this helps!

Laptop will not shutdown

Remove the battery and unplug it from the wall. Try holding down the power button for about 8 seconds it should shut down. Just a suggestion! When you shut down your laptop make sure that your shutting down properly at the start button select shut down. If all else fails and this does not work.
You may want to have the power button checked out or the board. Or clean files out and start up programs add-ware or spy-ware may be preventing you from shutting down as well. This is also a common issue that causes very slow shutdowns on any computer system packed up junk having to close out. John

When i start my gateway netbook lt20 a black screen pops up asking to start windows normally or 3 other options.. why?does this happen?

Usually because you didn't shut windows down properly before turning your computer off or completely draining your battery. If that is the case then simply select start windows normally and as long as you follow the correct shut down procedure it shouldn't happen again. If it does there may be a problem with your windows instalation.

My Medion MT6 desktop has developed a problem. When I power it up, the fans power up then shut down immediately. They then power up for a couple of seconds longer, then shut down. The process continues...

take it into a computer repair shop for a proper diagnosis
could be a faulty power supply or failing mother board
check that the power lead is properly connected top the pc

Why does my laptop always ask me if i need to scan my hard drive to fix my problems? I'm afraid of scanning because it might delete or format the hard drive.

If your laptop has not been shut down properly then when you boot up it wants to scan fix problems caused by not shutting down properly or by power failure. It will not format your computer so you won't loose you data. You could lose a file that was opened or not saved when the computer was turned off. If you continually stop the scan and not let the computer fix these problems, it could stop your computer from working properly.

My computer keeps shutting down for no apparent reason... I hasve a toshiba satellite p10...

Possible causes of the problem:
-
System overheating
- Virus infection
- Power supply malfunctioning

Solutions:

- Check your computer if the fan is properly working.
- Scan your computer for viruses
- Check your computer power supply by a qualified technician
- Reinstall your computer operating system

Try this also:

From the run box you can type shutdown -a and that should stop it from shutting down long enough for you to fix the problem. You need to look up how to remove msblast from your computer.

My laptop won't shut down properly!

Is it possible that you have changed the settings of what buttons do what on your system? E.g. you could have changed the power button to "switch user" instead of "shut down", to check this (in XP) go to "Power Options" (in Control Panel" and then click on the "Advanced tab" at the top, then select "Shut down" from the drop down menu at the bottom of the window.

If this is already set to shut down then maybe you could do a system restore in case another setting has been changed, restore it to before the PC started doing this.

Alternatively try actually choosing "Turn off Computer" from the Log On screen (press Ctrl + L to get to this screen, or choose switch user/log off). If you are using Vista I beleive that there is a shut-down option from the Log In Page there (which again you can access by pressing Ctrl + L on the keyboard.

Hope this helps!

Won't boot up properly

Try choosing Safe Mode. Then shut down windows properly, file shutdown, then start up again and see if that works for you.
