If he replaced the ballast, the light would stay on. if it only projected red, you have a main board issue.

I have a proxima 6850 and at least once a week it shuts down like the lamp has gone out, I turn it off for a minute from the power switch on the side of the projector and when I turn it back on it works...

Sounds like a heat issue, direct a small table fan into the unit next time and see if it stays on longer. If so then you may want to blow out the case with compressed air to get dust accumulation off heat sink or internal radiator.

ASK PROXIMA C180 no power at all

if you take the lamp door off, pay attention to the "peg" on the lamp door to see where it depresses the safety switch. if you look it is a silver metal lever that this peg pushes in. plug the unit in and find something no conductive to push and hold the lever in. while holding the lever in push the power button. if the unit powes up then that means the lamp door has distortion from the heat of the lamp. you can try to find another lamp door, or you can get creative and find a way to meld some more plastic to the length of the "peg".

Our Proxima Ultalight SV1 was displaying yellow on the screen for a while then while using it it made a slight pop then smoke started to pour out of all the vents.

the yellowing was the fried light filter on the blue lcd panel (due to excessive heat and dust). the lamp probably blew for the same reasons. unfortunately, you can no longer get parts for this model.

I have a proxima s540 ultra lite data

From what you describe, it sounds like a fan isn't working. When you turn on a projector, it will go through a quick self test--checking that everything is operating correctly. Some of the fans send out a signal to the main board telling it that they are running. If no signal is received, the board senses this and auto-shut down occurs to protect the unit from heat damage. The errant fan could be spinning but the computer pulse might not be being generated. It will require a tech to find this out.

Color Balance

reset the settings to factory default. then make sure that it's set up for computer and not composite. if no change, one of the light filters is fried due to excessive dust and heat.
