You can only observe if there is a bulging. Otherwise you have remove and compare with good capacitor with a meter.

Computer Crashes and Electrolytic Capacitors

Electrolytic Capacitors are something to keep note of when troubleshooting computers that crash. Symptoms can be: Will not boot, have distorted or no video, randomly shut off or on, distorted or no audio, or just do random and crazy things. Electrolytic capacitors can be found on a lot of electronic circuit boards (motherboards, video cards, sounds cards, power supply boards, network cards, etc). They look like a long cylinder with a stripe down one side indicating the negative polarity lead.

When looking for bad capacitors always check the motherboard first. The motherboard will typically have electrolytic capacitors around the processor. You then want to look at the card directly involved with the failure. If everything still looks good, then it can also be in the power supply. With general symptoms and where to look: Issues with powering on and off (motherboard and power supply), issues with video (motherboard and video card), issues with sound (motherboard and sound card), and etc.

Some general tips on recognizing a bad capacitor is looking at the top and bottom. The top should be flat, so if you see it bulging out, then it's bad. You also want to look the tops and bottoms over for any brownish substance leaking out. This substance is the electrolytic part of the capacitor and it can do damage to circuit boards. It can eat through traces, solder pads, through holes and cause opens that can't be fixed. Any time you see this on a circuit board, look it over very closely for damage after you remove the capacitor and clean the electrolytic off. I just use rubbing alcohol on a Q-Tip to remove electrolytic from a circuit board. Some manufactures use glue, epoxy, or silicon on parts to bond it to the motherboard. Don't confuse glue for a leaky capacitor. That stuff should be hard and not clean off with rubbing alcohol.

Electrolytic capacitors are usually easy to replace using a soldering iron, solder wick, solder, and side cutters. Make sure you put the new capacitor in with the stripe on the same side as the one you took out. If you don't, it could explode. Always wear safety glasses!

Have a JVC lt-46am73 tv. The power was interrupted and now the tv won't come on. Have a red light showing it is getting power. Is there a reset process?

With a TON of TV Sets, today... the Power Supply Boards have a tendency to go bad. Most of them use a very cheap and unreliable capacitor brand for the Boards and these capacitors are known to blow. If you have the back off of your TV Set - take a look at the Board where your Power Plug is inserted. Look at the top of the capacitors. If any of them are "Domed" (i.e. not completely flat) on top, the + shows any separation (this is the scoring on top of the capacitor, in the shape of a "+"), you can see where any liquid has come up out of the top, etc... you have a bad capacitor. You can, of course, replace these capacitors, but most people find it easier to just buy a new Power Supply Board... for they are easy to install. Hope this helps. Btw- if you look @ the capacitor and are not sure what to look for - just Google "pictures of bad capacitors" and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. Good luck!!

The tv screen shuts off every few minutes.

Good day!! That problem is usually cause of bad/faulty capacitors on the power supply board..So you have a better chances and easily locating the faulty capacitors if it is look like leak/bulged on the top.. So please try to follow this instruction on how to do that.. 1. Open the back cover of your TV. 2. Look at the power supply board..Its normally connected to the power cord.. 3. After that,,try to look at the actual image of capacitors if it is bulged on the top so that you can easily determine the bad capacitors.. 4. After that,,try to replaced the bad capacitors using soldering iron and soldering lead..replaced the capacitors only with the same type ratings and value.. 5. Some of the capacitors not bulged so its better if have a capacitance meter.. Hope it helps you..

Turns off after being on for 2 mins.

Had a fair bit of experience with these

Normally the Electrolytic capacitors in the SMPS dry out.
and when you power up the tv after a while the cap gives up dropping a supply rail causing supply to shutdown turning off tv.

2 ways of fixing this:

1. Take to Local Service Agent or electronics repair shop and explain that its the capacitors (they won't think your dumb and charge you heaps!)

2. If your feeling confident power down and disconnect from wall power..
leave for a hour or so to let the main capacitors discharge.

next take off the back cover and have a look for the SMPS PCB
it should be dead centre on the back of the screen and have large heatsinks onboard..(Aluminium fin looking things).

now scan the board for any faulty capacitors. and good capacitor looks like:
bennytechkid.jpg
A Faulty Capacitor looks like but not limited to:
bennytechkid_1.jpg
You'll notice that the good capacitors are flat topped and clean
any bad capacitors will have bluged tops or there insides hanging out!
then all you need to do is de-solder and replace with new capacitors.
whole job should take about 4 hours for a beginner and about $10 worth of capacitors

hope this helps,ben

I just bought a new compressor for my a/c but the store sold me the wrong capacitor. I need a dual capacitor but don't know how to read microferets to get the correct capacitor. Can you help me?

Do you still have the original capacitor for the unit. They probably gave you the size you need for the compressor. It should have the microfarads printed on the capacitor. The symbol resembles a strange looking u. Then look at the capacitor that came with the unit and get the microfarad rating for the fan. Now you will have the too readings you need to get a capacitor. The fan motor may also have the size capacitor you need printed on the data plate. Let me know if you need more help.

When turning on tv it looks wavey for a few minutes then it goes away. Also it seems like its not wanting to turn on sometimes.

could be the DM board or convergance or possibly power supply capacitor is wearing out. Further testing of capacitors will have to be done to diagnose problems. You can use a capacitor tester or voltmeter to test capacitors. Also look for burn marks or swollen capacitors.

No Power

Make sure that the capacitors that you replaced were the same UF as the original capacitors and that they have the same amount of tolerance. The tolerance of the capacitors is measured in percentage and should have been listed on the back of the package they were bought in. Also make sure that they were soldered into the correct position on the circuit board and you can figure that out by looking for a long black or white stripe on the capacitor and then look on the circuit board to make sure that the make matches with the side of the capacitor
