Do you have a hard drive and cd in the computer already? if so the drive probably wants to be recognized as either a master or slave in a slot that is already taken by an internal component. you will have to change the jumpers on the internal device or unplug it then turn your computer on and then plug the usb drive in. also are you using a 2.0 usb port? it's not the only kind even though they look alike.

The drive is not recognized by Windows or Mac

You should give Test Disk a try. It's a little complicated at first but if you read the tutorial it's easy.

Here's a link to their wiki page.

Not starting, clicks

Check and clean all connections to & from battery, as in the other ends of cables as well. Make sure starter wires are all in good shape & tight as well. When you hear that click, try to locate area or relay doing the clicking. It may just be a faulty relay. Sometimes it's as simple as removing it and plugging it back in to clean the connection. Do you by chance have a 12volt DC test light to test draw on battery?

I plug my seagate into the computer. it turns on but then nothing

Hi,

Plug one usb into your computer and the other end into the drive.
If the light comes on, all is good. The computer should install the device for you automatically. To access the drive, go to My Computer and double click on the Removable Drive. Now you can transfer files.

Hope this helps

Maxtor Portable 320 GB External Hard drive doesn't show on my Mac

If you can get a 3rd party disk utility like DiskWarrior because if the disc information has corrupted the computer cannot see it, the utility will re write this and if the drive is OK it will re appear
