Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

My washer is still under warranty; but is not spinning. The rest of the cycle works. I have been instructed by a rep on the 1300 number to open the little hatch at the front and unscrew the plug at the front (about 3 - 4 cm round). It turns but does not release or open. what is my next step?

It must have a bunch of stuff in it as it will pull out once released I believe it unscrews to the left a few turns.

I have a LG WM1814CW front load washer. I get UE when it trys to go on spin cycle. I re-arranged the load and still comes up UE. I also tried a cycle without anything in the washer and still the same...

The UE error code is nothing to worry about. It indicates an "unbalanced error"¬-your washer's way of saying that the drum is not spinning is a smooth rotation. It could be as simple as rearranging the load in the drum (click image for zoom). Here's why:

1) Small loads. Your washer operates better when the weight of the load is evenly distributed across the drum, but that is not always possible with small loads.
2) Mixed fabric loads. For example, if you're washing jeans and t-shirts, the jeans could be on one side and the t-shirts on the other, causing the unbalance. Try rearranging the items and spin again.
3) Large single items. Items like sheets, blankets and comforters tend not to spread out evenly, causing unbalance when the drum spins. Rearrange the item and start the spin cycle over.
4) Spin Sense Option. If your washer has the Spin Sense Option, it may try to adjust the load on its own. If that happens, the washer would slow down and tumble a few times slowly during the spin cycle and then speed up until the problem is resolved.

Hope this helps.

Very noisy during spin cycle

You probably need new shocks for the washer as they break over time. They cost $37 each and you can replace them your self. If you don't fix these you may end up breaking the motor controller and while the part may be covered under the warranty the diagnostic and labor is not.

I hate to say it, but more than likely this is a sign that your gearcase (transmission) is starting to go bad. When they wear out, they tend to exhibit slow spin problems. I have seldom experienced a bad clutch causing this. When the clutch goes bad it tends to cause the drum to not want to stop AFTER the spin cycle. In addition, if the motor coupling were bad it wouldn't spin at all. If you purchased the washer recently, it may still be covered under the manufacturer's warranty. Some manufacturers will cover the transmission beyond the usual one-year limited warranty. It's usually covered for 5 years, I believe. You may want to double check your warranty to be sure. Now...if it IS the transmission, and it's NOT covered under a warranty, all is not lost. A new gearcase runs about $145 and the part number is 423. It is also recommended that you replace the motor coupling at the same time. The price is about $14 and the part number is 1195967. Most consumers feel intimidated by the thought of replacing a transmission in a washer, but on this model, it is fairly simple and straight forward. I can provide you with step-by-step instructions, or if you like, you can purchase a do-it-yourself manual for about $17 (part# 1170635). Think about it...about $170 to repair your washer yourself. Or...spend over $300 to have the appliance repair guy do it for you. $170 is still cheaper than buying a new washer. I hope this information is helpful to you. Post back with any comments or questions you may have.

Washer spin cycle slams while ending

Gayle, sounds like your trans-brake assy. is binding up. I would remove the front panel, push in on the two clips just below the top on each side and pull the panel forward. Take a look under the tub and see if it has been leaking onto the trans-brake assy. You will see water marks or rust if so. If this is the case, trans should be under warranty for 5 years. If it's out of warranty, I would not invest in fixing it. Part number for the assy. is WH38x55. Look it up on the net and check it back.
