If you left gas in it for an extended period of time without running, you may have a gummed up carb. The carb will need to be cleaned and rebuilt. Or replaced.

If this is more recent, and was running fine up until recently and suddenly it could be a simple problem.

If it starts and doesn't stay running it means it is not getting proper fuel mixture while running. Or the fuel may be poor.

Take these steps. If it does not remedy, let me know with a as many specifics as you can so I can properly help diagnose the problem.

  • put fresh high test fuel in it. Siphon the old fuel first.
  • Check to make sure Air filter is clean. If it is dirty it will choke the engine and make it run too rich.
  • Replace the spark plug(s). It may not be getting proper spark to stay running.
  • Check the fuel filter. It should be inline with the fuel line, next to the engine. If you have never replaced it, it may be clogged.
  • Inspect the fuel line to the fuel tank. Make sure it is not pinched.
  • Get some Blaster LMT from a hardware store. If you can't find it any where you can use gumout, although its not as good. Spray it into the air intake. Fill it up. Let it sit for 30 minutes or more. Try to start the unit. If it fires spray some LMT into the intake. Don't over do it. Hopefully the the LMT removed enough gum to get it to run.
Some tips to remember.

  • Never leave gas sit in a machine for more then 2 weeks.
  • If machine will be sitting for more then 2 weeks and not started, then either drain it and run it dry. Or use stabilizer in the fuel, and make sure the tank is full.
  • Use High test. It takes longer to break down over time.

You need a carburator adjustment. I'm guessing it is a 302cid? It's burning too lean

I've a 1981 Vette that idles very rough with a cold engine start.

You need to have the choke adjusted so it runs on a fast idle so the engine can warm up or you may need the carb to be rebuild and adjusted properly.

Car dies when it warms up. just replaced carb, think it has to do with this

Vapor lock again! Make sure the fuel lines are away from hot surfaces, or insulated.
Also, when it warms up, the automatic choke turns off, and the idle setting has to be set to run at that temp. There will be idle jets, maybe two, and idle stop setting for the linkage.

M842 chainsaw wont start when hot

I suspect your warm start procedure is the fault, the manual is not correct IMO. Any choke on a warm engine causes flooding, try this, if no better post back or return it for warranty replacement.

Start Procedure
Cold:
  1. Ignition on/off to on.
  2. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release.
  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws); pull starter and listen for an attempt to start. once heard (usually two pulls; no more than 4).
  4. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release.
  5. Push (open) choke pull starter until it starts. (usually first pull).
Warm:
  1. Ignition on/off to on.
  2. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release.
  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws) – Do not pull with choke closed.
  4. Push (open) choke, pull starter until it starts. (usually first pull).

89 dodge shadow. hard start. normal idle cold, fast idle warm. sometimes it wont start until i hear fuel pump activate.

Hello,
The car may be hard to start because it may need a normal tune-up. If the spark plugs are pretty used, they will slowly stop burning as much fuel because the spark slowly gets lesser and lesser. On a cold day the fuel is harder to ignite with a small amount of spark.
Normal idle when its cold means that your cars idle is probably too high. If you lower the idle, the choke on a cold day will keep the idle a little higher until the motor warms and then it will kick back off. If the idle is too high, it will run very rich, smothering itself with fuel, and causing the idle to stay low. When the car warms, its creating better spark when its warm, and with the idle being too high its running at a fast idle.
The car wont start sometimes can be the cause of a few things. If the ground is bad on the fuel pump, it wont make a good connection sometimes for when you turn the key on, the fuel pump dont pump the fuel to the engine. Another one can be that your accessory switch can be loose going to the fuel pump. I think its your ground though. Good luck! Hope this helps.
Have a nice day. -Steve

Chainsaw wont idle, stalls even when warmed up. Runs fine once started on high idle. Initial start w/ choke, saw bogs badly, better when warmed up (a bit challenging).

these are the main things that you need to do. Put a new sparkplug in it. Make sure the air filter is really clean. Set both the low and high speed jets out 1 1/2 turns. Snake the fuel filter out of the gas tank with a hooked wire and clean the filter on the end of the line. If none of this helps then you more than likely have a bad diapragm in the carb. and you will have to get a rebuild kit and install it. Hope this helps you. Jeepfxr

Hi
I would suggest that you have the valve clearances checked.

Also, check that the carb is clean. Pay particular attention to the PILOT JET as this opperates the idle circuit.
