Since the headphone port is not working all you need to do is to replace the audio port, make sure you get the one that is compatible with your device and the sound will be back to your device.that solves it all.

Troubleshooting Sound Issues Verify that the audio cable is connected to the AUDIO OUT or LINE OUT output on the Sound Card and plugged into the AUDIO IN or LINE IN of the Monitor.   Make sure there are no cables connected to the Headphone Jack (located next to the AUDIO IN port) on the monitor. If there is, please disconnect that cable and try the speakers again. Connecting a cable to the Headphone Jack disables the speakers. If there is no cable connected into the Headphone Jack, test a pair of headphones into that jack to see if you can hear sound out of the headphones. If you are able to hear sound out of the headphones, disconnect the headphones and try the speakers again.   Verify that the Mute on the monitor is not on or the Volume is not turned down.    Verify that the Mute on the computer is not on or the Volume is not turned down.<    If there is still no audio from the monitor's speakers, connect the Audio cable to another audio source like a portable CD player or tape player headphone output. If audio can be heard through the monitor's speakers, then there may be an issue with the computers sound card.    Connect another set of computer speakers (if available) or headphones to the AUDIO OUT or LINE OUT output on the Sound Card. If NO audio can be heard then there is an issue with the sound card. Verify with the computer's manufacturer for additional assistance.   LCD TVs Troubleshooting No Sound from a LCD TV No Sound when using RGB (when connected to a PC) Confirm the audio cable is plugged into the Audio in on the LCD TV and the audio out on the computer. The N1700w is designed to take a 1.0v RMS audio signal for optimal sound quality.   Confirm that both the LCD TV Mute and Windows Mute are off. A general message will be displayed on screen to indicate status of Mute (On or Off).   Press the Volume Up Button on the monitor or remote to confirm the Volume is not set to zero.   Confirm that PC volume is sufficient by using Windows/Macintosh Volume adjustment settings.   Try plugging another audio source such as a CD or Cassette Player directly into the Audio port on the LCD TV to confirm the speakers work, or try plugging headphones or external speakers into the sound card on the Computer. No sound from headphones. Speakers work. Win7

Please clarify, Where is the Headphones connected? Front or back? if you tried it on the Front port without success, Plug in the speaker jack to the port where you did connect the Headphone and verify it's working or not. You can also try the headphone on the port where the speaker is connected.

Awaiting.

I cannot get sound from my internal speakers on dell d600 latitude. Headphones work and sound comes out of internal speakers briefly when pulling jack plug out? So I know they work but just cannot get...

This sounds like a defective audio port. In normal operation, plugging in a headphone plug breaks the connection to the speakers. On your laptop, when you pull out the plug it makes a connection, but only briefly. Unfortunately the audio port is built into the system board. I don't think you will find a software fix for this problem. Your best bet is to get a USB sound device for external speakers.

is this not getting plugged into the audio out? 3.5mm jack?

if your plugging headphones into USB port -not a 3.5mm audio jack they have there own sound card (technically)

and your sound card in the computer might not even be working

Can't get headphone jack on front of computer to work

The headphone jack up front may not be connected to the PC's integrated audio on the motherboard (or to the PC's sound card if you purchased one with the system instead. There'll be an audio cable running from the front of the computer to a port on the motherboard. If you look at this motherboard diagram for the Vostro 220 (not the 420 or 220s), it'll be the port numbered "15" that's the opne for the audio for the front panel. You don't need the speakers plugged on the back to have the headphones work, but having them plugged in will at least tell you if the sound is working or not.
