Have not seen this problem for years the little silver battery in your motherboard has gone bad and needs to be replaced a computer company should charge around $80 to fix ;)

My IBM ThinkPad 600e wont finish booting it brings up the 00173 00301 and 00163 code after pressing okay it brings some error box and gets stuck...anything I could do?

Most errors of this kind with a Thinkpad involve a bad CMOS battery. Try installing a new battery. If there is a BatteriesPlus store nearby, they can usually supply you with a battery and may be able to install it for you. It is my understanding that the CMOS battery in these units has soldered/welded battery leads instead of just being a coin cell that slips into a holder.

When the cmos battery goes bad, you can simply replace it, but a dead cmos battery will not stop your computer from booting.

Laptop wont start

This issue is often caused by either an incorrect setting in CMOS Setup or a bad boot device, such as a bad hard disk drive.

  1. Verify your boot options are properly set in CMOS setup. I recommend having the CD or disc drive as your first boot device and then hard drive as the second boot device.
  2. If your CMOS Setup has an option to boot from the LAN disable this option.
  3. If you have changed any CMOS settings, make sure to save and reboot the computer.

If this does not resolve the issue, try resetting the CMOS values to the default settings, save and exit.
If this fixes the problem but it reoccurs again later you main need a new cmos battery. Or keep your battery always slightly charged.

I have a sylvania synet 582 netbook i need the bios password it wont boot properly

Try taking it apart and pulling out the CMOS battery for 2 minutes. Then put the CMOS battery back in and turn it back on. Hopefully leaving out the CMOS battery will make the motherboard forget the BIOS password.

My Asus Eee pc 900 is very slow booting. I disconceted the cmos battery and this helped for a few weeks but am now back to taking a good 20 mins to boot, Now the cmos trick wont work. Anyone got any ideas...

Sounds like you disconnecting the cmos and it helping was just coincidence. The hard drive may be bad or your OS needs to be repaired or reinstalled.Alot of times when it does as you indicated the boot sector maybe corrupt or your hard drive has bad sectors where the boot info was written on the hard disk

Wont boot without password

Unplug the laptop and remove the main battery. Remove the cover for the memory modules and you will also see the CMOS backup battery located there. Unplug it for 10-15 mins, then plug it back in, insert your main battery, ac adapter and boot the system. You will need to reset the system date again once the CMOS is cleared.

Wont start...

Well first of all when you say "my cou wont start up" I assume that you're talking about your "computer". Secondly if it is your computer that is having the problem, and it's not booting up, it could be a couple of things. First I would try checking to see if the CMOS battery is dead, the CMOS battery is a silver, flat, round like object usually looks like a watch battery, you may want to replace that. If problem still persists, then you could have a bad power-supply. Take it to a reputable PC repair shop, and have them test the power-supply. My ultimate guess is that it's the power supply that is bad.

Cmos cheksum bad

From your problem description, it sounds like a corrupt BIOS and or a failing motherboard.

Due to the system age, I'd say cut your losses, salvage what drives are usable, and get a new (or newer) system

You may have a bad CMOS battery. Does it do this on restarts as well as cold boots.....if you only receive this message on cold boots, then you have a dead battery.
