Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Hi I have purchased a computer that was supplied by Currys as an OEM PC. Previous owner tried to reinstall OS using what I think is a different Vista disk..... the OEM key on side of PC is different than the one on the system.... Vista is running and asking for Activation.... The system was in its "basic" form and I have had to download Drivers etc Question is can I activate this version using the Product Key on side of PC as I dont have the disks used..... dont have any disks at all. Thanks Terry Suckling

The product-key was already entered when Vista was installed.
It is "too late" to change the product-key.
Take a "system restore checkpoint".
Then, try the "activation wizard".
If it does not activate, use System Restore to go "back" to that checkpoint date/time.

Or, contact the manufacturer of the computer.
They can supply a replacement set of "System Restore" CD/DVD disks for a small fee;
typically around $20, plus $20 for overnight-courier.

What is the specific problem you have connecting this internal drive? This is an internal SATA optical drive for a desktop with a standard 5 1/4" drive opening. Many optical drives ship as OEM devices; you will need to reuse the data and power cable from a previous drive or purchase a SATA data cable (7 pin). A locking cable can help keep the cable connected to the drive. If your power supply (PSU) doesn't have SATA power connectors (15 pin), you will need an IDE to SATA adapter. Most online cable shops have the best prices for these.

If your computer doesn't have a SATA port available, you need to add a controller card or use a SATA to IDE converter.

If your case is a ultra-small form factor, you may have a modified optical drive opening. These cases use a slim optical drive (mostly sold as laptop drives). In that case, get an external 5 1/4" enclosure or a USB to SATA adapter.

If you have the drive in the computer, press the Eject button. If that works, then the power cable to the drive is fine. Check the data cable to both the drive and the motherboard. My old computer had SATA connections on the motherboard that would not allow the cable to lock. When I bumped anything in the case, I had to check that the cable was re-secured.

What OS are you using? For most versions of Windows, your OS should have the correct driver or find it with Windows Update (if the computer is on the network). Try launching Windows Update and checking if an optional driver is waiting to be installed. I don't know if Unix or Mac OSX drivers exist for this drive. You may need a different optical drive.

The drive should now be listed in the storage devices (Computer/My Computer). If you can't read files, try another disk. If it still doesn't work, try cleaning the lens or a different drive. Some drives are sensitive to the power supply for burning optical discs.

I hope these suggestions help. Please add a comment with the specific problem and case/OS that you are using for additional solutions.

I bought this preinstalled on my dell laptop from currys about three years ago. Don't know where the product key is can you help?

Hello there, Usually when you purchase a PC the microsoft package is not pre-installed with the product key. You always have to purchase the product key to have complete access to the entire package. Usually you would have to purchase the key from the microsoft website. As there is no way to access the product key from the already installed version which was on your unit. Sorry for any inconveniences.
Hope this support has been helpful?

Product key for compaq Evo N610c

Hi! Welcome to www.fixya.com.
I think you are using a retail version of your operating system or you are installing the OS inside of windows. Its best to get or purchase a recovery disc from your manufacture because you dont need a product key that is needed because its an OEM products. Its already registered to Microsoft Corporation.
I think you need to reinstall the your Operating System again. Let me give you a website so It can do it outside of windows: First you need start the laptop and hit f12 to go to the boot menu then put the OS CD or recovery disc then highlight the CD/DVD then press enter until it says windows is loading files:Now check this website : http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-reinstall-windows-7-easily-step-by-step-guide/this can help you see the step by step process of the installation.

Hope this resolution fix the problem on your computer. Thanks for contacting Fixya. Bye for now.

My Toshiba Satelite Laptop pre-loaded with Windows Vista Home premium is not strting in normal mode but it does start in Safe mode with networking. How to make it work?

You can use system restore and restore your computer's settings to a previous date. Please choose a date during which you know that your computer worked fine. This will remove any recently made change that had affected windows Vista in your computer

If the cmos is password protected, then you must reset the cmos. The best way to remove any signs previous owners is to reformat or do a system restore. You ca do this with the disks that came with the computer, you should put the system restore disk in and be on your way. Just follow the on screen instructions and you should be all set.

Hope this helps

OEM vs. RETAIL OS CD

Hey Hicomp! Generally retail packaged software is designed to be sold in retail stores and as such comes with a lot of literature, extra paperwork, CD's, and usually tech support for the program you're purchasing. OEM packaged software is the same software just without the retail packaging, extra paperwork, and no tech support usually.
