My mower is great! After several years of use it now shuts off after about 5 minutes of use. If I let it sit a few minutes it will run again. I recently replaced the batteries thinking that this may be the problem. The mower is much more powerful with the new batteries but it still has the problem of shutting off after a few minutes of use. The motor is not hot and nothing seems to be overheading. Suggestions? I bought the mower as a reconditioned unit.

Re: B&D CMM1000 Mower
Convert your mower to cmm1200. you needs parts 905058-81 to convert it.this to elliminate the circuit board & it's easy to install just follow the instruction. circuit board was on recall depend on the date code of the mower it is also no longer available.

When it shuts down check it for spark. You sound like you may have a weak coil. OR
You might have water in your fuel and it only runs until it hits the water level in the carb. You can try draining your carb *(do this when mower is cold...never drain gas from a hot mower!) and see if the mower runs longer. While you are draining your fuel you can check the float level too. A float that closes too early or that is partially obstructed might only let in enough fuel to run for short periods. Then, your three minutes of sitting is just to let the carb bowl refill. When you remove the carb bowl let the float hang down and note the fuel flow. Is it fast? Or is it just a slow drip? If it seems slow you should work the float up and down a few times to see if the flow improves. If it does improve consider draining all the fuel out and cleaning the gas tank.
I have a 7 year-old craftsman mower with a 22 HP Briggs engine that has the same issue. After about an hour, the mower acts as if it is starving for fuel and then stalls. Then after about 5 minutes of sitting, it will run for a little while longer.
If your engine is similar to mine, then its carb has a fuel shut off solenoid which shuts off fuel to the Main Jet when Voltage is removed to prevent backfiring when the key is shut off.
Unfortunately, this solenoid can also cause the carb to starve for fuel when not working properly. In my case, when I cleaned the solenoid and the solenoid's connections, the tractor had no problem after that.
check the coil by pulling the plug and lay it against the head put the plug wire on pull the handle if it sparks then its not the coil another thing you can try is spay carb clean or starting fluid in carb see if it starts if that starts it then the float in the carb is stuck if i can help further e-mail me @firstname.lastname@example.org
