"hissing" freezer, red hot coils, and daily leak

My MZD2766GES makes a hissing noise. When I look in the I can see through the vent in the back that the coils are red hot. This also seems to be causing a leak from the same area that happens typically during the night. What is going on and how can I fix it?

well, the leak is actually water on the floor in the mornings. and it's a considerable amount. The "hissing is very rare and always accompany the red hot coils.

  • nashvilleCC Jun 08, 2008

hey, i figured it out, it was the defrost drain had frozen over and clogged therefore the extra water was leaking onto the floor. thanks

The coolant is leaking if the coils have a hole. You can't actually fix this yourself. A qualified and certified professional Must work with the coolant. You could order new coils but in order to fix the ones you have, you will need to contact a repairman about this. This isn't something that anyone can do. I can get you a list of contact people but I'm sure the place you bought it from or a local supplier will be able to help you out. good luck and please let me know if you have any further questions as I would be more than happy to help.

The hissing noise would be the leak, you should turn this off immediately to not cause any further damage to the system.

So the hissing I assume was coming from the drain then as it wasn't draining properly. Thanks for the update and glad you fixed it. Have a good day

It does sound like a bad fan motor. With the compressor getting hot you may need to change the start relay, overload and run capacitor if it continues to run like this with a defective fan motor. What is the correct model number? Sea Breeze
The condenser fan motor for a model MZD2766GES is part number=> 61005323 Condenser Fan Motor or here=> 61005323 Condenser Fan Motor

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly. Relax :) You just witnessed part of the NORMAL automatic defrost cycle. There is a heating element in a glass tube that melts ice off of the evaporator until either a thermistor or 60 Deg F defrost thermostat cycle and terminate the defrost cycle. Just so you know automatic defrosting cycle intervals are anywhere from every 6 hours up to 16 hours and 35 minutes depending on the model. The hissing sound you heard was melting ice dripping on to the hot glass tube of the heating element so the water was boiling on the glass tube. It is nothing to worry about unless the defrost cycle never terminates. (i.e the unit never starts back up)

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

Kelly

Water leaks from bottom of freezer side even though the water is turned off. Also makes a humming noise prior to leak. Leaks about every 3 days.

Clean the drain pan and drain line in the back of the freezer section underneath the evaporator coil. (hint: use turkey baster with hot water) Make sure water drains when you pour it in. If it doesn't - also clean drain tube on the back of the unit behind the cover. When done - make sure to put the tube exactly where it was.
Good luck! :)

In the freezer side, it leaks water from where the cool air comes through in the lower part of the freezer, seems to do it during some kind of a cycle, of which I have not figured out.

It's doing it in the defrost cycle.
Clean the drain tray and drain line in the back of the freezer section, located behind the back cover and underneath the evaporator coil. (hint: use turkey baster with hot water) Make sure water drains when you pour it in. If it doesn't - also clean drain tube on the back of the unit behind the cover. When done - make sure to put the tube exactly where it was.

Good luck! :)
