Hello

A lot of times while using the mixer, the ingredients can work their way up the beaters and make their way into the gear section where the beaters attach. This can happen especially when mixing bread dough, cookie batter or any dense or heavy ingredients and this could slow down the speed of the mixer.

Refer to owner's manuals when fixing an electric mixer.. it could be that the appliance isn't getting the proper voltage. Test the mixer using a voltmeter. If the mixer is getting the proper voltage, it could be that one of the gears are worn out mixers have additional gears around the motor that need to be repaired before touching the motor.

Finally check the motor for faults,If the motor is faulty it has to be completely replaced.

The planetary housing of my Kitchen Artisan mixer moves up and down. I can move in with my hand and it moves up and down occasionally when mixing. This just started.

Properly having a look to find the cause is going to involve removing the planetary (remove chrome drip ring and knock out the pin) and then removing the back cover. Remove the white and the black wires from the speed control and take the return spring off the bottom of it. Undo the 9 screws holding the gear cases together and separate the 2 halves. You will now be able to inspect the shaft, spacing washer pins and gears on the planetary driving shaft. Normally they have a bit if movement up and down in the planetary (when it is fully assembled) I've never found a fault within the gearbox to cause it or if I have it's been through someone pulling it apart and not assembling it correctly. When I do them I add an extra fibre washer on the outside between the planetary and gearbox housing, there should already be one there, I add another of suitable thickness to remove play but not make it tight.

How do I fix a kitchenaid stand mixer that won't start?

First make sure it is plugged in.
Second make sure the outlet is not GFCI, check it with a lamp to ensure there is power.
Check the black screws on the side first after you unplug it from the wall. They will screw out with a dime or wide flathead screwdriver.
be carefull this is where the brushes go.
Caution: They are spring loaded. And the cap will fly if you are not careful. check both sides to make sure the brushes, little square shaped pieces of carbon, are long enough and making contact.
You can pick a new set up for your model on amazon pretty cheap and they are a snap to reinstall. If this fails you have to check the rear section of the mixer to ensure the circuit board does not have any burnt pieces on it. It will be obvious when you see the tiny PCB if there are any dead components. You can also pick these up on Amazon fairly cheap. Aside from that find an appliance repair shop where you live and have them fix it.

My kitchenaid mixer run on high at all times

If your mixer only runs on high speed there are 3 things that can cause that. The first thing to check will be the speed control plate, Remove the trim and end cover on the mixer, the first thing you should see is the speed control plate, this has 3 screws on it, try adjusting the top two screws 1/4 turn, this should slow the mixer down, do not over tighten. Also check to see if the control plate spring is unhooked. If the spring is unhooked, attach to bottom of the control plate, and squeeze the spring end.
If this does not fix your mixer, check the wiring of the mixer, you can locate a wiring diagram on the last page of the service manual.
If the speed control plate is adjusted correctly and all the wiring is correct it will be your speed control phase board. You can test the speed control phase board to see if it is shorted. With the line cord disconnected, pull the t-b ar contacts to open, and insert a piece of paper between them so they cannot close. Reapply power-the mixer should just run or buzz trying to run. If it operates at full speed, teh phase control board is defective and needs to be replaced.
Here is a link to the service manual: http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/mendingshed/kitchenaidservicemanual.pdf
This will aid you in taking the mixer apart, troubleshooting and putting it back together, remember the wiring diagram is the very last page.

Well, I was attempting to replace my speed lever. In the process I removed the back cap (electrical circuit board) and the two screws on the side (flat, springs with magnets attached). After I replaced...

Hello Lora,

I understand that you took you speed lever out to replace it and you took the brushes out of each side of the unit. The reason that the unit will not start is more than like the brushes are not installed the proper direction.

1. Unplug the machine
2. Shine a light in the hole on the hole on the side of the unit. You will notice a notch or a piece sticking out.
3. Take one of the brushes (magnet looking things) put the notch and the cut out in the same corner.
4. Repeat the samething with the other side.
5. Plug in and check and see if it runs

This should solve your problem with the brushes. IF you have any more questions about this mixer please post it to this discussion.

THank you for choosing FixYa.com

Hi, I have a used Hobart A200T and the bowl yoke piece moves up and down slightly, even under a light load. It makes an annoying clanking noise. It's as if a spring somewhere is looser than it should be....

You may be correct about a loose spring. Check this:

Carefully lay the mixer on its back side to access the bottom of the mixer. Remove the cover screen covering the opening in the bottom of the mixer. Using an extension and appropriate socket, be sure the nut of the bowl lift rod is snug, slightly compressing the spring of the bowl lift rod.

How to replace motor brushes? I only can take the small springs after unscrewing the caps on both sides. The carbon brushes are still inside? Tell me how to take them out and just put new brushes with...

I believe the brushes and the spring are one piece, so the brush should come out with the spring. Either the brushes are so worn that you just aren't noticing the little bit that's left, or the block has come loose from the spring. You can tip the machine over so the brush hole is facing down and let gravity do the work. If there's any brush left inside, it should slide out. Otherwise just install the new brushes.

Springs on side under black screw, came out

Or, more helpfully, take them back out.  Look in the hole, and you will notice that when you look through, the hole turns square. At the end the square, there is a little tab / square in one corner.  It is generally *not* the same on both sides. You'll notice that the end of the piece you took out (the part that looks like a magnet) has one corner cut off -- so it's a rectangular box with one of the corners gone.  Line up the missing corner of the piece you took out with the corner that has the little tab -- this allows the piece to get past the tab and be fully inserted.  Reminder: check both sides, because they're not the same. And now, more helpfully, if you're curious, check out flea markets and get a broken Kitchenaid to take apart for $20 or so. Don't mess with your nice one. : )

KitchenAid KSM90 gear stripped?

I just ran into this problem when the PLASTIC worm gear broke and then the mixer would not power on after I replaced the gear. The problem was due to the was I tried to dissasemble the mixer. I removed the two plastic screws near the top center of the mixer when attempting to disassemble. These do not have anything to do with the assembly it turns out the attached square pieces (attached to these screws by springs) must be in the proper orientation to run. I put them in the way it showed in a diagram but it did not work until I tried all four different combinations that they could be rotated. Two of the rotations on the square could be eliminated by closely looking at the end where it contacts the shaft. The round shaft marking will be evident on the square inserts. I'mnotsure how to better describe them, but the are attached by springs to the plastic screws on both sides of the top of the mixer.

Sunbeam mixer

When you open it, there is are contact points and a piece that has to touch to change the speed. It may just be slightly bent or out of place. Some food may have gotten in there.
