We cannot adjust anything, the screen is so dark that we can barely make out the information

  • uplandhm Oct 14, 2010

I repeat my comment. The screen is so black that we cannot perform any action

  • uplandhm Oct 14, 2010

Our Toshiba Satellite A55-5106 has a blackened screen, so dark that we cannot perfom any operation. We can just barely read what site we are on (Google). This problem happened when we started up the laptop. Previously it was working fine.

It sounds like your inverter has burnt out and that is what illuminates the lcd. Usually these run about 30$ for for the part itself on those series laptop. Unless you have quite a bit of expertise I wouldn't recommend you trying to service this problem yourself as you may cause more irreversible damage. If you need any other information let me know.
Thank you,
Lee

Hello, and thanks for using FixYa.

could you clarify? do you have light on the screen at all? Have you tried adjusting the backlight power?

    hi

that sounds like the backlight is either faulty or the small inverterboard that supplies power to the backlights is faulty.

Sounds like you haven't got a working backlight on the screen. Since its a laptop lcd, it will be very difficult to replace. You may have to replace the whole display and inverterboard possibly if problem remains after replacing screen.

But to avoid buying costly screen, I insist you take this machine to a local professional for diagnosis as I can not be absolutely sure what part is faulty without testing the machine myself.

if the machine is in warranty contact toshiba or your dealer, repair will be free.

what do you think you can do about this hardware fault if the backlight adjustments don't work? do you think there is magic someone can perform to bring it back to life?

The backlight lamps or the inverter board is faulty.

Toshiba satellite pro p100 screen problem

The LCD can be replaced. The part is around $50-$75 I believe. It can be tricky to replace, but if you take your time, you can save money by doing it yourself. The screen sounds cracked or broken, and black & white will not work either.

good luck

How do I replace the keyboard?

next to the F1 key and the windows key (2nd upper key and second to last key) are two screws, usually under some covering. unscrew and lift top edge of the keyboard towards the trackpad to lay face down. Undo the wire ribbon by lifting the grey or brown tabs and remove ribbon and keyboard. Then install the new keyboard by inserting the ribbon on the place. Lock down with the tabs and put the plastic prongs (close to the space bar) into the laptop body first, and then close keyboard onto the final position. screw back in and thats all. nboulikas@gmail.com for any additional questions.
