Clothes stuck under agitator

I would try to get clothes out, even if destroyed first. Otherwise,
there is a plastic cover cap on the top of the agitator. remove
by unscrewing or prying off. Hold down nut is exposed and remove
carefully, gently and with a ballanced pry up from underneath to raise agitator.

I caught a piece of plastic bag in the power mate. The overload/ reset button is now lit and the agitator won't turn. I have taken the head apart removed the agitator and put it back in place, and there...

Try turning the agitator by hand-double check all is free and you have not missed anything-check manual for reset button-some buttons you have to hold down to reset-the manual should tell you how to reset

I have a Maytag performa it works well but has developed a fault in that the agitator rides up and floats on its own when washing!

If you check toward the lower end of the agitator there should be a screw which is supposed to hold it in place. It may have come loose or come out altogether. Fixing it will stop the agitator floating up.

Machine wont agitate

If the machine sounds like it is running OK. The agitator has lost its connection drive shaft because gear splines that connect it to the agitator have been damaged. You didn't really do anything wrong, this just happens occasionally. Hopefully yours has a sleeve that can be replaced rather than replacing the whole agitator.

It is tricky on some agitators, their may be a nut on the top of the agitator that holds or connects the agitator to a drive shaft. The top of the agitator probably has a plastic cap that covers this up and can usually be pried off to expose it. If there doesn't appear to be connection like this then the agitator may simply lift up. If you decide to try lifting the agitator up, let me know and I give you further guidance.

You might also call your local Appliance Supply store and with your make and model number, ask them if you unit has the sleeve or do you have to replace the agitator. I'll bet they will tell you.

Agitator keeps rising up and washing getting stuck/twisted underneath

The nut that holds the agatator on has come loose and is properly floating around in the agitator.Or it just needs to be pushed down to lock it in place. At worst the bolt and nut has rusted away. (repair man)

Machine quit agitating, but spins fine

After looking further into the machine's actions I then grabbeds the clothes mover to see if that would do anything. It started agitating, so I just finished the agitation cycle by manually holding the appropriate area, and then I removed the agitator coupling and noticed that the splines were wore down.

You are missing the coupling that holds the agitator to the shaft.

Loose Agitator

Usually, there is a bolt that holds the agitator on. If you remove the cap off the center of the agitator, you should find a bolt underneath that you can tighten back down. Adding a little thread lock to the bolt wont hurt.

I've got the same problem. The diagram is a bit deceiving because it appears to show the agitator/auger as one piece. However, the bolt only holds the agitator (lower portion) and then the auger slips in place over that. The fabric softener cup then snaps to the top of the auger.

Best I can tell is that the slotted 'ears' on top of the agitator are worn thus preventing a secure fit between the agitator and auger. I just finished putting some hard thumb pressure on each of the ears and bent them outward some. The auger fits much tighter now and I'm doing a test run of clothes. It is holding but I will probably have to replace what they describe as the agitator / auger assembly, costs $53.54. I don't see any other fix but would appreciate further input.

Maytag won't spin or agitate

I have had the same problem and found that the teeth on the under side of the agitator had been worn down to nothing... I assume this is from years of over loading (not from me) and so the agitator could not spin any more... i would tighten the bolt that holds th agitator on and it would come loose after a few loads. So my solution was to get a little bit longer bolt and newer plastic washer and tighten it as tight as i could and it seemed to work. Versus buying a new agitator base that would cost about $20-$30 and would have to wait for the part to be ordered. hope this helps
