Hello, when you buy a new hard drive you have to install your own operating system. The Hard drive is blank from the factory.

My old hard drive stoped working so I got a preowned one and now it is telling me it can't read the hard drive what do I do

The preowned hard drive maybe faulty.
To test this hard drive, connect this hard drive to an USB hard drive adapter then plug the USB hard drive adapter into the USB port of a working computer. If this computer can see the USB adapter and hard drive as an external storage device and you can view the folders and files on this hard drive the the hard drive is working, if not the the hard drive is faulty and you need a new hard drive.

Hi I am vortash , Just a suggestion but why not just buy a USB video capture device off Ebay and turn an old lap top into a PVR then you can fit an external Hard drive and record for however long the hard drive is capable of ?. You would possibly have greater control of picture search also when trying to find a particular piece of recording . Regards Vortash

New sata hard drive i installed keeps saying ntl not found checked bios ok cant start up to format drive or insall opperating system any idea?

Hi mikecoombe,

The easiest way to put in a new drive is to boot to the old drive as a master then put the new drive in as a slave. Make sure that if your using all sata drives, that you specify which drive to boot to in your bios. Then Format from your OS, and load away.

Good Luck

Additional hard drive needed

Just buy a new SATA HD of what ever capacity fits your budget. Keep the old one as it works with your setup. There is no point causing extra work for yourself.

Power off the computer. Conenct Power to the drive and a SATA cable to the new drive (should be supplied with it) and the motherboard. Power on the computer and then format the new drive. The drive letter will be assigned by the Operating System. Once completed you have a new drive to use.

Opperating system not found

Hi,

First thing you need to try is remove all disks from the computer, CD's, DVD's, Media Cards, External Harddrives, Floppy disks or USB drives.

Any of these could be attempting to boot and causing the error. If you remove all of these and still get the same error, either the hard drive in your laptop or the installation of windows is damaged.

If the installation is damaged, you can restore the system using the factory set of Recovery disks from Toshiba but this will wipe out any files and programs you have saved on the computer.

If you try this and it fails, the hard drive is likely faulty and will need to be replaced, then the Recovery set can be used to set up the computer using the new hard drive.

Either way if you do have important files on the drive and need them back you may need to send the drive to a pro for Data Recovery. If so comment back here and I will get you contact info for one of the companies I use.

Putting damaged hard drive into new laptop

Have you considered an external case for your old hard drive? These can be found at newegg and tiger direct. I have successfully gotten data off of some old laptop drives this way. Hopefully your drive was/is not encrypted or this solution will probably not work.
In order to know if the drives will fit you would have to look up the specifications for both laptops. Look to see if they are both the same as far as hard drive size (2.5, etc), connector (IDE or SATA). One problem you will encounter just swapping out the drives is that there will be new hardware in the new computer and Windows sometimes reacts badly to a big change in system components. Sometimes it will blue screen, sometimes it will ask you to reregister and boot up, but even then you can have problems. Hopefully this helps some.

Error loading operating system

The Thinkpad T23 is old, and would not worth fixing. Save your money on a new one.
The problem with your laptop is that the hard disk or the disk controller has failed and therefore cannot find the operating system on the hard disk. The error message states that it can't see the operating system that is on the hard disk.
.
If the hard disk is the only thing that has failed then you can buy a new hard disk and install Windows operating system on it to get a working laptop again. You will also most likely need to download the device drivers (ie. video, audio, modem, LAN adapter etc.) from IBM to install after the Windows installation.

Try to borrow a 2.5" drive or get a cheap one from a computer market and fit it to your laptop to see if the BIOS can detect the hard drive. If it works then outlay some money to buy a decent size hard drive, no point wasting money if the laptop is faulty.
.
