Hello, and thanks for using FixYa.

Does the laptop ask for a HARD DRIVE password when you turn it on? or is it asking for a power on password or just password?

If its asking for a hard drive password, you can get rid of this problem by replacing the hard drive. To unlock the password from the hard drive, it needs to be connected to a desktop computer and special commands need to be send to the drive directly. It is fairly complex, you need to take it to a professional.

If your laptop is asking for something else, let me know.

Acer aspire one won't boot

One bad lead or faulty connection point can cause a computer to shutdown continue restarting on a cycle or fail to detect your hard drive boot up

test all power and data leads that attach to your hard drive SATA

the leads from your (motherboard to your hard drive) make sure they have a secure dust free connections and are not faulty

make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd have secure connections and are not faulty

even something as small as faulty fan lead can cause you problems

computers need all of the data and power to travel through every working device and to have an end for a computer to be able work properly

a motherboard and a hard drive any leads between them will fail before your motherboard or your hard drive check all power and data leads make sure they are securely seated even the cd/dvd drives need to have current go through make sure these devices are working

check the CPU central processing unit make sure it has thermal paste and dust free secure seating

also check your computer ram modules and cmos battery make sure it has charge and they are dust free and securely seated some motherboards cmos batteries are soldered in

hope it helps

My wife just inherited a1999 Buick LaSabre from her aunt who just passed away. The car has not been started or driven in 4 years. We want to be sure we do the right things to "bring the car back". Should...

I would take it to a qualified mechanic before attempting to drive it home...
Esspecially if home is more than a hundred miles away (AAA+ covers upto 100 miles free towing).

I inherited an inspiron mini but my aunt left her password in. I don't know the password. What can I do?

if you are willing to lose the data you can reformat the computer with these steps:

1) insert the windows installation disc
2) boot from cd
3) when you get to the hard drive manager part delete all of the hard drive partitions (it should make one partion)
5) format the one partition
6) install windows to that partition

Acer aspire one model zg5 when boot up, screen remains black

Hi,

There are approx 6 reasons why this might happen:

  1. The backlight has gone (Find a dark place and shine a torch into the screen and see if you can see an image in the background, if you see an image then the backlight has gone) - Needs a new backlight (Engineer to remove and fit) or have a new panel fitted.
  2. The panel has died - Need a new panel
  3. A cable has worked itself loose or is broken
  4. The inverter has gone - Need new inverter
  5. Long shot, the bios has got corrupted - Engineer could re-flash the bios
  6. Long shot, Mainboard onboard graphics has gone - Need new mainboard
My personal opinion is that the backlight or inverter has gone - Either way it needs to be opened up to repair it, consult a service centre and get a quote or repair it yourself if your up for it.

Thanks

My acer ZG5 does not start up there is a black screen and a message stating that there is no bootable device and to insert boot disk and press any key; I don't have a boot disk so how can I fix my problem....

The bootable device is your laptop's hard drive. This meesage usually appears when the hard drive has crashed or the Master Boot record is damaged. you can repair this if you see message that gives you an option to recover your hard drive, try turning off then turning on the laptop to see the option appear during the boot process. But the catch here is that you might not recover your personal files after the recovery. If you have important files in your Hard drive bring the laptop to a qualified technician to recover your files.

Aspire ZG5 Won't Complete Boot Process

Hello Dzaitz,

A description of the error message: http://aumha.org/a/stop.php#0x21a
Basically, Windows' security has been compromised - so it won't work until you fix the security issue.

The "0xc0000005" part means that the error occurred in your memory. Most likely this was either caused by the power outage or malware. If the power outage caused it, there may be other damage that isn't obvious at this point.

Since you can't boot into Windows, your choices are a bit limited.
First, I'd suggest that you run this free, bootable memory diagnostic: http://www.memtest86.com/
As a "just to be sure" measure, I'd also run a free, bootable hard drive diagnostic (available at the support website for the manufacturer of your hard drive).
If you pass those 2 tests, then I'd suggest a repair installation of Windows XP. If you have Internet Explorer 7 installed, read this first: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=917964. Then the instructions for the repair install are located here: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

HITACHI HARD DRIVE LOCKED

Hello Oldnovii
This Toshiba notebook has both a BIOS and hard drive lock on it. The client has already paid $ 25 to the Toshiba depot to have the BIOS lock removed now they want $ 100 to remove the hard drive lock. The hard drive lock cannot be removed by trying to bypass it using a boot cd or disabling the hard drive boot option in the BIOS. Any help will be appreciated since my client has now had the notebook for 2 weeks and cannot use it. Thanks
