Archos 404 problem

When trying the + button thing, I just get the code 1 recovery, instead of the code 3, which is the same problem the computer just does not recognize the device.

Double check Archos website or helpline - some manufacturer's have a specific recovery program for such problems.

Recovery code 101

A) Download the firmware from Archos and save it to your desktop (Make sure the file name on the desktop hasn't changed from the original download file name)

B) The Archos 5 or 7:
1- Plug the unit to you computer via the USB cable.
2- The unit should start automatically and open the following page:
3- From the recovery console (the screen that asks for repair or format etc…)
4- Select "Repair" by scrolling up and down with the volume control on the right of the unit (Do not press "Format" at any time)
5- Now that you are on "Repair" press the on and off button, shortly to validate your selection
6- The unit will go to "Plug the unit etc…" but it is already plugged from point 1 - DO NOT press anything anymore on the Archos
8- Wait until Pc should recognizes your Archos (around seconds)

C) Computer
1- From your computer select the firmware file you downloaded from the net and put it in your Archos (in the root folder, nowhere else, where it has the folders, music, videos, pictures etc… as a file)

D) On the Archos 5 or 7
1- Select "Ok" on the Archos (on & off button) shortly to select and confirm the file is now on the Archos
2- you are done! The Archos 5 or 7 should now read through the file you have transferred and repair the system
3- DO NOT DISCONNECT the USB cable until the process is finished
4- when done safely disconnect (as you usually do, for Mac trash the letter of the Archos to the bin or for PC's: right click the green icon bottom right of the screen for xp & vista)
5- Press on/off button to reboot

Your unit should restart with a fresh repaired, updated system like day one.
Good luck!

Archos 400 won't turn on (error code 3)

I hard tried the same thing to transfer a 6.7GB file to another computer.I had formated the drive as an NTFS drive. when i turned archos back on, it failed to turn on give me error code. but for some reason it asked me to do a recovery. I remember i had seen some recovery files in my archos device saved (zipped file packages). And when it was doing the recovery i noticed it was reading the zipped files for recovery purpose. After the recovery, i did not see the files anymore in the device. So if i do the same thing again (format as ntfs) i might not be able to recover it back again.

Your answer to Archos 404 problem

Aha - that is a different matter. To get the computer to recognize the device: Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.

You might want to double-check your Archos manual first - sometimes, instead of Volume +, they reccomend a different button.

I need help plz email me asap thanx:)

You may want to check with Archos to see if they know the exact button that you need to press (sometimes it is "Record," sometimes it is "Play"), but every Mp3 player has a Recovery Method. The downside of all recovery methods is that they delete every file off the player, so you will have to reload them later. For 80% of players, the recovery method is this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.

Choos 'Repair disk' while connected to your computer, then go onto www.archos.com go into support, downloads, choose your model and clck on download archos..... Then go into my computer click on the archos device after that has finished downloading and drag that file into the archos folder and the rest it does itself.
