Exactly the same problem. I have tried blowing the dust from the optical lens but its exactly the same. Very disappointing for Panasonic who must have lost a lot of customers with this apparently very common fault.

I have the same problem the published "rented" disks work fine however dvd-r's are inconsistant with recording and sometimes won't be recognized at all.

My problem is that I was able to record an event on a DVD-R, and the images were there before I tried to finalize, but there was a problem finalizing. The disc was completely full. Now it won't read the disc at all, it keeps giving me a disc error read. How can I extract the recording from the DVD-R? This was a very important event, I need to retrieve the images.

Hello jancinn,

This might be due to a dirty pickup or scan laser head, or the optics as a whole might be going bad (both are common problems). A qualified TV repair person should be able to determine if the scan laser or pickup head are bad by doing a laser power test. If the optical devices are dirty it is just a simple matter of cleaning them with a DVD cleaning disk, however if the optics are bad, then replacing them is actually cost inefficient, and you may want to think about getting a new DVD player/recorder.

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

Shuttle83

Self checking

I have had a Panasonic DMR-E85 with this exact same problem you are describing. As I bought a Freeview Dual-tuner PVR I just bought a second-hand DMR-E55 as I liked the Panasonic interface. Two months down the line it is now exhibiting the exact same problems, except now as well as the continual self-check rebooting, it's also refusing to eject the disk. Booo. Time for me to buy a new DVD recorder again, and this time certainly not Panasonic... :(

How do i finalize a disc

..issues with the DMR-E55 recorder:

http://club.cdfreaks.com/f106/problem-recording-panasonic-dmr-e55-130046/

..here is your manual:

http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/support/DVD-Recorders/model.DMR-E55K

...and on page 33 of that manual they discuss how to do the finalizations.

From my experiences on a friend's DVD recorder,
you need to go 'step by step' and in exact order or the processor
in the machine may not see the correct labeling codes on your disk
at the time you finalize. The "problem issues" referenced in the first
link should help you keep from stumbling over an 'error prone' situation
and may/may-not apply, but IF it does please contact your original sales location with that information.

Panasonic dvd recorder wont record or play

It is also possible that you are trying to record using an already used -R or an unformatted RAM disk.

Will my non finalzied discs play on a panasonic ez 28 or ex 768

You will have no problem playing your non finalized discs on any of the Panasonic DMR range including the DMR EZ28 series. The DMR E55 can also easily be repaired if you can use a soldering iron and a little care. Please checkout my other postings for full repair details.

Cant read disc

Try checking the scan and pickup heads of the DVD with a DVD cleaning disk . If this does not help the optics or the decoder/encoder might be defective. In that case, you will need a qualified TV repair person to work on these units for you all.

I hope this helps

Panasonic DMR-E55 DVD Recorder Problem

I have been told that panasonic now have a faster speed disc on sale to suit the newer dvd recorders that dmr-e55 cannot record on as they are too fast. You have to buy the slower speed ram discs to suit the dmr-e55.
