Notebook screen stays dark

I read your post about a dark screen wich still shows the image in some bright light. i'm having exactly this problem. you said the inverter needs to be fixed and that it isn't very expensive. could you clarify a bit more? what and where is the inverter and can i change it myself?

Make sure you check under a bright light that you can actually see the image.

This model is notorious for a bad video card (Radeon) that makes it seems like something is wrong with your screen but if you press down just above the keyboard it will work while you are holding it.

If you see an image you have one of two things:

Bad inverter
Bad backlight bulb

If you saw the screen turning pink or red on cold starts before your backlight is burned out and it's just faster and easier to replace the LCD.

If you just saw a flicker and then screen went black the inverter is the problem.

The inverter is a little circuit board that sends power to the backlight bulb, so even though the bulb is good it won't get power to light up. If the bulb is bad replacing the inverter won't change anything.

The inverter is located just below the LCD. Disconnect AC and remove battery.

Remove the rubber plugs along the top and the two oval stickers on the bottom corners. They cover the screws. Remove the screws and carefully pop off the bezel with your fingernails moving around the edge as you go.

Under that you'll see the inverter. Use a fingernail or flatblade to carefully pry the connector off and then unplug the wire harness on the other end. Install the new part. Test it.

If it's working, then reassemble. If it's still dark the backlight is shot or your inverter was a dud.

If it's the backlight, you can remove the screen now that it's open. There are just a few more screws on each side of the LCD and removing a couple on the lower brackets can help you temporarily raise the screen up from the lid to more easily access the screws on each side.

The connector on the back is very delicate. Walk it out with your fingernails and try to reuse the tape if you can. Never pull by the wires.

Replace and test again.

Again, make sure you can POSITIVELY see an image on the screen before doing this repair.

As i mentioned earlier the X1000 has a bad video card the makes the computer boot up and show a black screen and even boot into windows but will NOT display video on the LCD or even the EXTERNAL video out. You can test this by plugging it into a desktop monitor.

That will be $300 please!

When I open my laptop, the screen wiil open, flash then go dark. I can barely see the windows logo but the screen is to dark to operate. I have checked, and it is not a brightness issue.

OK ..I think it is a driver issue ..and some changes you made on its settings will now causes this ..when it starts the windows..The fact that it shows the image for a short time ..makes me think it has nothing physically wrong ..and just when the windows kicks in it goes issued..To fix this you need to boot on windows in safe mode...This will not use the driver for video ..and will show image if my guess is correct ..
to do that ...just press on start the F8 key repeatedly ..and choose the safe mode from the menu ..and press ok (enter) .
once in windows need to remove the driver or at least to load it again ...To do that ..use the driver disk you got when you bought it ..or download it from the support site ..and run it into computer .
here is the link
select the exact model and exact operation system ..and choose teh video driver and download it ..

My screen is VERY dark...I can shine a light onto it and I can see do I repair it?

On your laptop there is an Fn (function) key and another button showing the image of sun. Keep Fn pressed and then click the "sun" button to increase the brightness of your screen.

No brightness to the screen background is dark.

Take the laptop into a darkened room.
Does the correct image show, but very dim ?
If so, then the "back-light" in the LCD has failed.
It's about a $20 part, and it will take a qualified technician less than one hour ($60?) to disassemble the laptop, replace the part, reassemble, and then test the laptop.

My toshiba screen

Shine a torch light onto the screen. If you can see a faint outline of the images, it could indicate a back light failure. Unfortunately, you cannot fix this by yourself. You will need to take it for servicing.

Screen went dark (almost completely)

check your power cord and make sure it's plugged in all the way, and if it is, check your brightness setting.

Usually it's the Fn key + an arrow key. Make sure the brightness is up all the way
