Question about Compaq Presario X1000 Notebook
I read your post about a dark screen wich still shows the image in some bright light. i'm having exactly this problem. you said the inverter needs to be fixed and that it isn't very expensive. could you clarify a bit more? what and where is the inverter and can i change it myself?
Make sure you check under a bright light that you can actually see the image.
This model is notorious for a bad video card (Radeon) that makes it seems like something is wrong with your screen but if you press down just above the keyboard it will work while you are holding it.
If you see an image you have one of two things:
Bad backlight bulb
If you saw the screen turning pink or red on cold starts before your backlight is burned out and it's just faster and easier to replace the LCD.
If you just saw a flicker and then screen went black the inverter is the problem.
The inverter is a little circuit board that sends power to the backlight bulb, so even though the bulb is good it won't get power to light up. If the bulb is bad replacing the inverter won't change anything.
The inverter is located just below the LCD. Disconnect AC and remove battery.
Remove the rubber plugs along the top and the two oval stickers on the bottom corners. They cover the screws. Remove the screws and carefully pop off the bezel with your fingernails moving around the edge as you go.
Under that you'll see the inverter. Use a fingernail or flatblade to carefully pry the connector off and then unplug the wire harness on the other end. Install the new part. Test it.
If it's working, then reassemble. If it's still dark the backlight is shot or your inverter was a dud.
If it's the backlight, you can remove the screen now that it's open. There are just a few more screws on each side of the LCD and removing a couple on the lower brackets can help you temporarily raise the screen up from the lid to more easily access the screws on each side.
The connector on the back is very delicate. Walk it out with your fingernails and try to reuse the tape if you can. Never pull by the wires.
Replace and test again.
Again, make sure you can POSITIVELY see an image on the screen before doing this repair.
As i mentioned earlier the X1000 has a bad video card the makes the computer boot up and show a black screen and even boot into windows but will NOT display video on the LCD or even the EXTERNAL video out. You can test this by plugging it into a desktop monitor.
That will be $300 please!
