Dyson suddenly hard to push on carpet

I have had my Dyson DC14 for two years and have never had any issues. Suddenly it is very hard to push on the carpet compared to tile flooring. I actually have to strain to push it. I have the button next to the power button pushed on as it should be for carpet. My belt also appears to be fine. Any ideas?

I know this sounds silly, but it works. Turn it over and wipe all the black residue off the bottom of it (off the plastic on the bottom that rubs on the carpet as you push and pull it). I thought my husband was out of his mind when he told me that was the solution, but it really works.

I had exactly the same problem with a Dyson (different model) and this solution really helped. I think that the problem is that when the Dyson is new, the filter is clear and the bar on the base is free from gunge. As the gunge builds up, the filter is also getting dirty and the two balance each other out. The problem can come when you clean the filter and you then have the fully restored suction fighting against the layer of gunge on the base. Cleaning it off all areas of the frame on the base made a real difference. Many thanks.

I had this problem too. We ordered a new bottom piece from the Dyson website adn it fixed the problem. 2 of the rollers were missing and hair wrapped around the back two. The new piece comes with the new little rollers and it works great again.

I had to take my soleplate off and clean all the dust out of it. One of the little plastic wheels was blocked with dust and wouldn't turn around.

I doubted this would work, but I took off the bottom plate and washed it in hot, soapy water.VOILA...it now moves across my new carpet with little effort. I really appreciate this forum!

If the brushes are turning, you may need to clean the brush of any hair or anything else that has collected on the brush. If you have been cleaning it regularly,

My dyson dc17 animal had become nearly impossible to push on carpets. I did some research and somewhere on this forum i saw that someone mentioned replacing the roller.

sure enough i found that my roller was warn down to nubs (vacuum is probably 8 years old, and gets used nearly every day)

I replaced the roller and WOW! it feels like its self propelled now. HUGE DIFFERENCE.

thanks for the help!!

i've become a bit of an expert at maintaing my dyson over the last few years. One of the biggest lessons i have learned after wasting lots of money is to bite the bullet and buy ONLY genuine dyson parts. I know it sounds like I am schilling for them, but clearly these vacuums are made to very high specifications and work very closely with each other to keep the vacuuming functioning as a unit. Ever time i used an aftermarket part, it ended up wearing out rediculously fast, and almost always cause another aspect of the vacuum to malfunction. The parts that especially gave me grief were belts, and rollers. If those two aren't genuine, the whole vacuum screws up and breaks constantly. I've also had aftermarket hoses fail quickly. You really do get what you pay for with this vacuum. It will give you many years of perfect functionality if you maintain it with good parts. Hope this helps

I had the same problem, very hard to push my DC14 Complete on carpet. I noticed a piece of crayon stuck in the debris channel, the extreme leading edge of the rotor bar. Removing this crayon, solved the problem.

My Dyson DC17 Animal Is a couple of years old. I just got new plusher carpet and the Dyson is almost impossible to push on the new carpet (it still is OK on an old area rug). I called Dyson to see if there was an adjustment for different carpet heights. They said no - but asked me to take the filter out from under the canister to see if that made any difference. I tried it without the filter and it was much easier to push. When I told the Dyson Customer Service Rep this she told me the problem was a dirty filter. I washed the filter according to the instructions, but it was only slightly better. I did some research on the internet and read that if you let your filter get too dirty (which I probably did) sometime even washing it doesn't unblock it fully. I ordered a new filter and hopes that does the trick (I'll know as soon as I get it). I have my fingures crossed.

Dyson dc14 brushes not turning

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

I'm sorry to hear your DC14's brush bar isn't rotating. This could just mean that the brush control is set to 'Hard floors' rather than 'Carpets'. To check for this, please take a look at our Support guide:

My Dyson - DC14 won't push on my new plush carpet, front end

Same issue: new plush carpet, 7 year old tried and true DC14, wouldn't push across regardless of beater brush on or off. Called Dyson this morning, they suggested removing the small gasket between the floor plate and the assembly holding the beater brush. It's about a 12' gasket just under the screws used to remove the floor plate. Pushing is still a bit stiff, but it is a definite improvement. Whew!

Loud noise with belt protection system On

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC14. The knob you're describing is the brush control, which turns the brushbar on when set to 'Carpets', and off when set to 'Hard floors'. The machine may not pick up hair from carpets if you have it set to 'Hard Floors'.

The brush control system is also designed to make a ratcheting sound to warn you if something is jamming the brushbar. The easiest way to check for and remove any obstructions is to follow the steps shown in our online support guide:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=668&product=DC14-ALLFLOORS_US

Once you've removed any threads, hair and other obstructions from around the brushbar and cleaner head, you should find this resolves the issue. However, if you've tried this and are still concerned, please get in touch with us directly so we can help. You can call us free on 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 1866MYDYSON (US).

Kind regards,

Does not seem to adjust to different carpet sizes

Hi Denise,

DC14 is engineered to adjust automatically to suit the type of flooring you're using it on. You can also use the brush control on the cleaner head to turn the brushbar on for vacuuming carpets, and off for vacuuming hard floors.

However, if you're concerned the cleaner doesn't seem to be working correctly, please follow the steps shown in our online support guide to identify and resolve any issues:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=626&product=DC14-ANIMAL_US

If you've tried this and still feel the cleaner isn't picking up as well as usual, please get in touch with us directly so we can help - you can call us free on 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 1866MYDYSON (US).

Kind regards,

Dyson 14 extremely hard to push, what would happen if i used it without the sole plate

Hi there,

Sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC14 All Floors. We'd strongly recommend against attempting to use the cleaner without the soleplate in place. It may be worth checking with the carpet manufacturer, because certain types of carpet aren't suitable for cleaning with an upright vacuum cleaner.

If you have any further questions or concerns about your cleaner, please get in touch with us directly. One of our experts will be happy to provide the information and assistance you need. You can call us free on 08002980298 - our Helpline is open from 7am until 10pm, 7 days a week.

When i set it on carpet instead of bare floor it is hard to push when i vacume (when i turn nob it only has two settings floor and carpet no high pile or low pile)

Hi there,

Sorry to hear you're having difficulties using your DC14 on this particular carpet. You may want to contact your carpet manufacturer to check it's suitable for cleaning with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a revolving brush. Manufacturers sometimes recommend cleaning certain types of carpeting using suction only.

If you have any further queries about using or maintaining your Dyson vacuum cleaner, please get in touch with us directly. One of our experts will be happy to provide the information and assistance you need. You can call us free on 08002980298 (UK), or 1866MYDYSON (US).
