Gateway AR-230 DVD Recorder not playing DVDs

I recently encountered a problem where this device will play about 40 seconds of a DVD (whether store bought or burned on this recorder - several different DVDs tried) and then stop. This also happens with a cleaning disc. The device has suffered no trauma and has not been mis-used. I have had no other problems with this device.
