Have you gone to your 'setup' screen to see if the system recognizes the full drive? If not, the motherboard's BIOS may need to be upgraded or the Windows version may not recognize the very large drive. Hope this helps some!

If the Western Digital tools tell you that there are too many bad sectors then it is possible that your drive is failing and will need to be replaced.

Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus 750gb temporary fix / refrigerator

I could not recover any files and the drive would not id on my desktop. I kept plugging in and out the power chord to see if it would ID. It did briefly (3 minutes) and then started clicking again. My whole system would freeze until I unplugged it. Even with SeaTools. Then I thought it was trying to recalibrate to find track 0 so I put it into the refrigerator for 6 hours (42deg F), took it out and powered it up. I was able to back up all my files to my DVD burner and now it is back in the fridge. Go figure......Greg R.

It might need to be formatted to NTSF file system. Go to disk management in device manager it should be listed as unallocated disk / space.

The drive is formated to fat32 and i want it to be formated to ntsf so i can upload files bigger then 4G, how can i do it safely?

You will lose all the data on the drive during formatting so copy it all to your computer before format. Once done, with the drive plugged in simply
  • go to "Computer" / "My Computer" right click on the external drive and select format.
  • Select ntfs for the file system
  • Give it a volume name if you like and just do "Quick Format"

HD initialises but nothing allocated? BLANK?????

Hello,
Before trying out a 3rd party utility software,

What you should do is,

depending on your operating system,

Right-Click on 'My Computer Icon', then select

'Manage'.

When you get to Computer Management page,

Click on Disk Management on left hand side,

This will display ALL the disks installed on your system, either partitioned or not partitioned, formatted or not formatted.

Then go to the ones that are hidden, not created, or not displayed, right-click on it, then you'll see different actions that you can perform.

Also, in some instances, what you just need to do when you get to this page is to assign a new, distinct, drive letter apart from the ones already in use on the system.

This will automatically bring out the hidden drives.

Hope I have helped you out.

Goodluck

Recording stops within 10 minutes

Hi G-DyBiec

If the video capture automatically stops capturing at approximately 18 minutes (17 minutes and 55 seconds), then most likely the drive that is being capture to, is formated using Microsoft's FAT32 file system. Microsoft's FAT32 file system has a maxium file size of 4 GigaBytes (4 GB), which equates to a DV video clip of nearly 18 minutes. (18 minutes = 1080 seconds, @ a data rate of 3.6 MB/sec is approximately 4GB). So for hard drives that are formatted using FAT32, this behavior is normal. This is not a limitation of Studio..

To see what file system your hard drive uses do the following:

1. Right click on the Start button and choose Explore
2. Under My Computer, locate and highlight the drive you are capturing to
3. Right click and select Properites
4. On the General tab, towards the top, it will say "File System". It will be listed as either FAT32 or NTFS.

There are a few solutions if your drives are formatted using FAT32:
  1. Convert your FAT32 hard drive to NTFS *
  2. If you can copy any important data from this drive to other drives, it may be faster to re-format the FAT32 drive using the NTFS file system. **
  3. You can do multiple 18 minute captures and string them together in the Edit mode of Studio.
    • Since the first 18 minutes is already captured, rewind the camcorder or VCR to 5 - 10 seconds before the initial capture stopped (which can be edited out later in Studio).
    • Start a new capture to a new file name.
    • Repeat this process until all the desired video is captured from the tape.
    • After all the files have been captured, go to Edit and assemble the captured files from the Album to the timeline in the order you desire.
This is a manual method to workaround Microsoft's FAT32 file system and if this is too time intensive for your needs, then steps 1 and 2 above may be more suitable and should be considered.
* Note: If you need assistance with step 1 above, go to the Microsoft web site at http://www.microsoft.com/ and search on "convert FAT32 to NTFS".
** Note: If you need assistance with step 2 above, go to the Microsoft web site at http://www.microsoft.com/ and search on "how to format a drive in XP".

NOTE: Microsoft's NTFS file system is only supported on Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista. NTFS support a file size of 4 TB (terra bytes), which is larger than any current consumer hard drive capacity, so if NTFS is used, the capture file size will only be limited by the size of the hard drive.
