Question about Janome Memory Craft 4900QC Mechanical Sewing Machine
The machine has a small micro switch under the lid of the machine that is either stuck or bent. Remove the top and look in the area of the bobbin winder and flip the winder to engage and disengage. You should see a swith that the bobbin winder pushes against. That should be the problem, if it is bent you may be able to straighten it out.

Thanks for this help Douglas as it led me to fixing my machine with the same error but slightly different solution. I had to undo not only the 2 screws mentioned but also the left hand side portion of the machine in order to remove the top. I checked the switch and it didn't seem bent but I did notice that the screw which held down the bobbin winder component was loose. I tightened it and bingo! Brilliant! Thanks again for your guidance sending me in the right direction.
