We were told when we bought it that we would be able to play ps1 or 2 games and DVDS even though we are region 2 and it is region 3. how can we make it work.
Hey fester14,
Depending on the model that you purchased, the backwards-compatibility of your Playstation 3 may be somewhat limited. According to information provided by the manufacturer, several of the Playstation 3 models (most notably the 20GB and 60GB NTSC-format models) were built equipped with what is referred to as an "Emotion Engine" hardware processor that allowed backwards compatibility to both the PS1 and PS2, while others (the 60GB PAL-format and 80GB NTSC-format) only provided software support for select titles from the PS2. Unfortunately, neither the 40GB NTSC nor 40GB PAL-format model are currently able to support PS2 games at this time.
Sony itself does provide an online database that owners of a Playstation 3 can search to see if their system is compatible with any given title, which you can access by following the link below:
http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus
European owners of a Playstation 3 will want to refer to the next link however, as the one above only applies to games and consoles purchased within the United States.

Remember that even if a game is listed as being compatible with a specific Playstation 3 model, there is no guarantee that the game will run as smoothly as it would on the original console it was made for, and that some users may experience graphical errors or other glitches that may interfere with gameplay.
Please also keep in mind that the Playstation 3 does have a regional lockout, and is only able to play DVD discs intended for sale in the region where the Playstation 3 itself was purchased.
Hope this helps you out.
Sincerely,
Aaron
