it doesn't have a magneto ..it has a stator coil.

  • gaucli Oct 14, 2010

the stator coil is only 2 years old.

  • gaucli Oct 14, 2010

This is on a 1986 glassmaster boat. The amp, and rpm guages are erratic. Sometimes the amp guage will work..sometimes jumps to full charge....sometimes neither will work. If you hit power trim or tabs it will make them jump.

Do You think that it could be a possible negative ground wire. I doesn't effect the horn, lights or any other electrical devices. Thank You very much!

Last time I came across a problem like this it was the Strator unit on the motor. Have the strator checked. I have also seen this condition with compression problems. Also do a compression check to see if you have steady compression on all cylinders. Uneven compression will produce this erratic behavior.

I advised to check the strator coil in my first posting. I see you posted it was only 2 years old but if it is weak or has a loose connection it will cause the problem you have indicated.

The magneto is weak and when you try to run too much you are drawing all the power from it ,my advice would be to mount a solar panel with a regulator for about 80 euros i paid and i use this on my mercury as the regulator has packed up and its 350 euros so i leave solar panel connected permantly, with two batteries and a heavy diode on the positive feed from main start battery to aux battery and communial earth i have no problems ,solar panel is connected to main battery its 80watts with two panels that fold together the size of a lap top .i leave it permantly on the roof of my boat ,dumped the 2T engine years ago this mercury 4T is brilliant its so economical compared to the old mercury 2T

2007 Honda 225 4 stroke outboard randomly misses between 2500 & 2900 rpm.

The first and easiest thing to do is replace the spark plugs and gap them. After that is it a guessing game for electrics or fuel delivery. My advice for marine engines is always professional service as the consequences of breaking down on the water are always a problem. The engine is only 10 years old so it probably has onboard diagnostics. The engineer connects it to a computer and it tells him what is wrong.

Have a 2 stroke 225 Yamaha outboard. Alarm for what I can tell for heat, an oil went off today. Runs fine at lower rpm, but goes off when it goes up beyond 21 rpm.

How long has it been since you changed your water pump? The pressure relief valve can also cause over heat issues if it is stuck.

my main suspect here in a case like this is the reed valve ,its sits behind the carb and all 2 stroke engines have one ,if you remove this and its clean and sealing up ok then check the stator under the flywheel ,In the end i gave up with the 2 stroke engine and bought a 4 stroke engine and the amount of fuel i have saved ?? Under the flywheel on the top of the engine is a advance /****** mechanism and this could be sticking or siezed up as well

Skipping, lack of power, 4 stroke mercruiser

has your boat been sitting more than 60 days. ethanol gas has been proven to only stay stable for 30 days in 90 degree + weather. Labor cost can be up to $100.00 per hour. CHEAP TEST- compression, spark, and fuel. TOOLS(1) A compression gauge (2) a spark gap tester.(3) A Clymer service manual for your engine. (you can purchase from your local dealer). I know all these are expensive but if your going to be a outboard owner you will always need them. TROUBLESHOOTING (1) check compression. without the year model I'm giving you a average numbers. Look at your Clymer manual for specific numbers. all cylinders need to be over 100 lbs and equal each other within 5 lbs.(2) check spark. use a spark gap tester all cylinders should jump a half inch gap. if you have good compression and good spark, fuel is the problem nine times out of ten. Drain gas tank, clean fuel lines replace primer bulb and replace all fuel filters. Finally replace spark plugs, I know spark plugs probably don't look bad but this is a outboard. Fresh spark plugs means less resistance for the ignition system. The ignition system is week compared to automotive. Test drive boat, if the problem is still there then there is further steps to take. Again I don't know the year model so I guessing its fuel injected. Pull out your clymer manual. what is great about the Clymer Manual for Novice techs is it gives detailed info on your outboard. Troubleshooting tips and teaches you how your outboard works.

Firing order 1 2 3 is common on most three cylinder outboards. 1 3 2 is the only other combination.
