Hp says maximum memory is 2 x 512, yet memorystock and other sellers say I can go up to 2 x 1 gig. Is this safe?

If the computer is a model a710n, the motherboard will take up to 2 GB of RAM. Full motherboard specs are here, and they'll tell you everything you need to know to get compatible memory.

if you are using a 32 bit operating system it will not recognize all of the memory in some instances or the mobo is not designed for more than 2 gb maximum check the mainboard (motherboard) website for specs on your model. sometimes you have to use 64 bit operating system to be able to get the full use of memory over 2 GB

Transcend 2GB Jet Flash V30 problem

There are some specification of USB speed. There are usb 1.0 , 1.1 , 2.0 . 2.0 is fastest among these. Normally back panel USB ports are USE 2.0 s. If you have installed your motherboard successfully , they should be working fine. Please try Installing those. If it not works, probalby your motherboard has not hte capablity of running usb 2.0 s.

thanks

Not getting full 2 gb ram from 2 x 1 gb cards

Do you have onboard video on this computer? If it has integrated video on the motherboard, the motherboard will be stealing (sharing) a small bit of your MEMORY for it's own use. This is normal with integrated video..
If you have a video card in and expansion slot with it's OWN memory on the card , then it will not use the systems' memory.
I would choose low density for compatibility with the widest range of computers.

I don't know the memory capacity for my computer

The Dimension 2400 will hold a total of 2GB DDR Ram (2 x 1GB Dimms)
I don't sell RAM, but I do work on a lot of Dell's where I work.

Motherboard / Service Tag: to find out the service tag, when it's not printed anywhere on the box:  Restart or power on the PC.  When the pc is going thru POST, press the F2 key a few times, so the pc will boot into the BIOS.  Depending on the age of the BIOS, the serivce tag should be displayed on the first page.  If you can find the service tag, you can look up the original configuration on the Dell website.
Hope this helps

Conflicting information about maximum memory allowed

Your problem is not so clear. I guess you are having a P-4 with MSI Mother board. Almost all motherboards that support DDR 333/400 can support up to 2 GB of memory.

It is always better to buy brands like kingston.
