Question about Hand Tools
Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly.
Here is the user's manual:
You connect the Red alligator clip to the 12V DC positive battery cable and the Black alligator clip to the negative battery terminal OR chassis ground. The inductive lead always is clipped on the the #1 cylinder spark plug wire and then you shoot the light on the area of the engine where the timing marks are. Timing marks are not in the same place on each engine. Older V8 engines the timing mark is on the harmonic balancer on the front of the engine. Newer small engine vehicles such as Honda the timing marks are on the flywheel and you will have to remove a rubber plug from the bell housing to see the marks. Also some manufacturers have you check timing with the vacuum advance hose removed and blocked from the distributor. Most timing information is in the engine data specifications of the vehicle owners manual.
