Question about Kenmore 3.2 cu. ft. Plus Top Load Washer

1 Answer

I have a 70 series 110 20702990. When the unit goes into spin cycle it seems to create too big a load for the motor. The motor starts a series of load clicking noises like a relay or solenoid are turning on and off and eventually the circiut breaker will go at the electric panel. It does it whille empty and while full. I had it apart and the motor did spin the drum with the water pump out of it.

It's starting to look like the motor itself. The brake and clutch system look great, I cleaned and greased the drive tubes from the transmission, and tried a new pump. The motor overheats very quickly even while agitating in wash mode and the thermal breaker switches off.

Did you look in the water pump? Sometimes things get into it. Other times sand gets in there and locks or binds the bearing. Even makes it melt!

Note after reading a bunch of information. I went home and removed the hose from the Level Switch and "clean it", if you will and re-attached. Started a load, and bingo bango bongo, it work. Thanks for the insight.

Kenmore 70 Series Washing Machine Drains, But Won't Spin

Yes sir, a bad motor coupler could cause the machine not to spin. You did the right thing in checking out the lid switch and the pump first. It sounds as if the motor coupling is worn and may be slipping. I will attach a link to a video that may assist you. Hope this helps and best wishes.

Washer agitates, drains OK, but spin doesn't start

Timer is defective. Your unit has a netural drain. When finished agitating, the shuts down and then starts up reversing to drain and spin. On the initial reverse start, the water drains without the transmission spinning. After a timed period 3-4 minutes, the timer is supposed to pause, stopping the motor for a few seconds. When the motor stops again, the transmission shift to the spin cycle and when the timer resumes power tothe motor it should spin. You are doing the same thing when you lift the lid...stopping the timer and then the tranny shifts and when you set the lid down, the washer spins. Replace the timer.......

If it goes through the complete cycle o.k. except for the slow spin then the motor itself needs to be checked.
