There are tons of vob to avi programs out there, all of them are pretty much the same as far as speed goes. The commercial paid versions aren't all that much better than any of the free ones either. Overall converting vob to avi is a slow process in general.
I've stopped converting and instead now I just download the video I want to play as an .avi file already.
BUT to answer your original question:
Handbrake (It's Free and awesome)
I'm not sure what you're doing exactly but you could also try to just rename the .vob extension to .avi It works for the most part but it all depends on what you're doing.
