Question about Gateway Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Hello, I recently purchased the 12-cell battery for the Gateway NV5214U which I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. However the laptop does not recognize it. It says to remove the battery as it could potentially damage the laptop and then it shuts down. Do you have any reason what could be the cause of this ? How do I fix this problem? I am sure it is a fixable solution. Could it have anything to do with the differing voltages on the 12-cell battery vs. the 6-cell battery that originally came with the laptop ? Looking forward to your response.

Thank you for this response. I believe that the voltage may be the issue as it higher than the original. The original 6-cell is 10V and the 12-cell is 11V. You would think the battery companies selling them would ensure they remain the same to avoid these type of issue.

The BIOS is already updated so that is a non issue. The only thing I can do at this point is to search and see if there is a 12-cell battery with a 10V capacity.

    Thanks again for your help.

First, you will need to check the voltages of the 2 batteries & make sure they are identical. Both batteries should have identical voltages. The only difference should be that 12-cell batteries last longer than 6-cell batteries.

Next, take the battery off the laptop, & using a dry tooth brush, scrub in between the fins of the battery connector on the motherboard & on the battery it self, then put the battery back into the laptop & try again.

And last, if none of this works, then try updating the BIOS. Sometimes this solves problems with the battery not being detected. You can download the BIOS for your model from Gateway support site. You have to download the BIOS for your exact laptop model. I would also recommend to do some research on the Internet before updating the BIOS to see if somebody else encountered the same problem on the same laptop model, & whether it was solved by flashing the BIOS or not. Beware not to turn the power off while flashing the BIOS, or you might render your laptop unusable.

cells in batteries are rated at 2.2 volts a cellm so 6 cells = 13.2 volts
if you have a 12 cell battery that would = 24 volts

Update to windows 7 on Gateway M-1624 Notebook with vista

You can upgrade to windows 7 from Vista is pretty straight forward. All you have to do is put Windows 7 CD in while running Vista and automatic startup should show you options to choose. There's some trouble with it sometimes for example, you can't upgrade a 32-bit version of Windows to a 64-bit version, or upgrade from a higher edition of Windows, such as Windows Vista Ultimate, to a lower edition, such asWindows 7 Home Premium. If this is the case, you'll need to use the Custom option during installation. Please remember that while Upgrading will keep all of your files and programs, custom installation will NOT. So you would need to back everything up before you start. Before you install Windows 7 make sure that all of programs that you need will work on it. For more information visit this microsoft website dedicated to upgrading to windows 7 >> http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/help/upgrading-from-windows-vista-to-windows-7 Have a nice day and good luck.

Upgrading windows xp to vista

You can upgrade from your current edition of Microsoft Windows XP or Windows 2000 to a corresponding or better edition of Windows Vista by purchasing and installing an upgrade copy of Windows Vista.
While selecting the edition of Windows Vista that's right for you, it's important to clearly understand what hardware your PC will need to ensure the features you want will run reliably.
