I have a whirlpool laundry washer, WFW8400TW, 27 mos old. It's not working though the buttons light up. The door is locked and I can' open it. It indicates a code F 31. A repair person suggests that it is a computer and would cost half as much as the price of the appliance. Is this probable?

Sounds like a reasonable diagnosIs. Will I be able to to procure a CMU? I am reasonably handy at repairs, should I DIY?

Hi,

MCU FAILURE
If the heat sink gets too hot, the Motor Control Unit (MCU) will stop the motor, the MCU will communicate this failure to the Central Control Unit (CCU), then the CCU will reset the MCU.
If the condition continues four times, the F31 code will show.

1. Check for proper installation, verify the unit is not located near a source of heat and has proper ventilation.
2. Unplug washer or disconnect power.
3. Check wire harness connections to the MCU, the motor, and Central Control Unit (CCU).
4. Check the drive system for any worn or failed components.
5. Plug in washer or reconnect power.
6. Check the MCU by looking for operations of the drive motor.
7. Check the drive motor for powered rotations

If the problem persists then You need to replace the MCU unit.No other way.And it won't cost that much May be Maximum 200$

E:27 error code. Wet laundry is locked inside the washer. How can I get the door open manually? I've already unplugged the machine and waited and tried resetting everything.

E:27 message means that the door locking mechanism has malfunctioned and/or is overheating. Unplug the machine for 30 minutes and try again. If that doesn't solve the problem you need to call the service.

Door is locked! Won't open! Laundry is stuck inside!

If the water has not completely emptied, this wont allow the door to open. Check by lowering the outlet hose into a bowl. If a fair amount of water comes the problem is likely to be a pump blockage

Washing Machine Door won't open

I had the same problem. I went through all the steps on this thread to no avail. Finaly I just pryed the thing open - with no damage, thank goodness.

Once open I saw that the latch in the door didn't move when I pulled the handle. The problem it seems was in the latch on the door itself. If you end up this problem and want to get wet clothes out, just stick a flat-head screwdriver, behind the door latch into the horseshoe-shaped metal bit and lever it open - no prying necessary.

Not sure how I'm going to fix this permantely but at least I got my wet clothes out and can do laundry as long as I keep the screwdriver near by.

To fix - I'll either need to figure out how to disassemble the door and replace the latch mechanism, or just buy a whole new door.
