Question about Dryers

1 Answer

I have a Whirlpool LGN2000PW gas dryer. The dryer will heat up when it is first started and get warm, but after a few minutes it cools right back down. We removed all the duct work in the basement leading out of the house and found no obstructions. Per a suggestion we found online, we removed the tubing off the back and let the dryer run to check the air flow and see if it was hot ~ It was so we figured there must be something restricting air flow from the back of the dryer. Here's the funny thing. We decided to check to see if it was really working by placing a load of wet clothes in and running it with the tubing still removed. Initially the dryer heated right up but after a minute cold air was blowing out. We removed the clothes and tried the process again....Hot air, dryer seems to be working fine when no clothes are in. But the moment we put wet clothes in, heat goes away. Is there a sensor in the dry that detects how dry the clothes are? Is it possible that that sensor may be effecting when the dryer heats up?

If it still quits heating after a minute or so then its either a weak cycling thermostat or moisture sensor thermistor, both located on the blower housing, or the moisture sensor bars located near the door opening on the dryer,or it could be a high limit thermostat thats bad on the burner tube itself

Whirlpool gas dryer Model #WGD5530SQ0 not heating properly

If your dryer heats when you first turn it on and after a few minutes it does'nt. check the ignitor to see if it is glowing. It should glow bright then you will hear a click and the burner will light. If the ignitor glows bright but you hear a click but no flame and if you watch this for several minutes and this process continues of glow then glow goes out no flame, then you have a bad burner coil. There are 2 black solenoids sitting on top of gas valve. One of them is shorting out after it warms up. Replace both solenoids. You can usually get them as a kit from parts store.

My whirlpool dryer heat does not stay on. when i first start it , its hot then the heat turns off. it continues going with no heat

With the limited information you gave I will assume this is a gas dryer that the flame starts for a minute or so and then shuts off. This problem is going to be your safety valve coils...basically they get old and over time of heating then cooling develop a short when they heat up...It may appear the gas lights to start but then goes out until the safety valve coils cool back down. Here is a picture of the coils 57d5263.jpgThis The coils are mounted to the gas safety valve, This should solve your problem. Hope this helps, Please feel free to comment again if you have any further questions or concerns. Good Luck! Mike

HEAT ONLY STAYS ON FOR A FEW MINUTES. WE HAVE ALREADY CLEANED OUT ALL THE LINT FROM EVERYWHERE.

replace the 2 coils on the burner . After they warm up , one will "short" , therefore the gas will not come on unless cooled down for a bit .

I have whirlpool dryer that the heat seems to kick on and off it is gas dryer

If heats for a few minutes then cuts off (heat) , then the 2 coils on the burner valve are probably bad . OR check the vent hose to the outside for good air flow . Sometimes , a dryer is pushed too far back , and it kinks the vent hose . If coils are bad , when dryer cools down , then restarting , cool coils will heat again for a few minutes , then stop heating till they cool off again .

Gas dryer not maintaining heat. 70 Series Kenmore/Whirlpool 76722

Fuse is ok . Problem is the soils on the burner valve . If the dryer heats when started , the electricity goes thru the coils to open the valve . Once the coils get warm , 1 will open (short) until it cools back down . The coils can be replaced just by removing the front panel . Only 2 screws hold the coils in place . No turning off gas , dissasembling dryer .

Dryer gets warm at first but then cools down

Check the hi limit thermostat and the cycle thermostat. They may be opening too soon.
Remove the connecting vent on the rear of the dryer exhaust and see if it cycles normally.
The flame sensor may be malfunctioning.
If the gas valve coils are good, these are the only other possibilities.

Whirlpool dryer stops after 5 minutes

Locate the circuit breaker for the dryer. Run the dryer for awhile and with the back of your finger pressed against each of the two switches (it will be a double breaker), see if the breaker is getting warm or wait until the dryer quits then check the breaker for any noticeable increase in temperature. With properly rated breakers, they should not get warm. If getting warm, it is a sign the breaker is bad and should be replaced.
