I have absolutely the same problem. The Audio Device Manager icon has just vanished from the control panel also.

I have Intel mother board - Intel Desktop Board D945GCNL. I tried to run the installation CD (drivers), but was of no help.

Please specify the Motherbaord version

Anyways if it is Realtek (Most motherboards do have realtek only) you can download the latest version of realtek drivers from
http://www.realtek.com.tw/

Sound are not working

1: check the speaker wire. it should connect to a green port at the back of the computer.
2. In control panel open realtek audio device manager. it will tell you where its connected
3. If its a monitor speaker then do a factory reset for the monitor.
4. try to configure the speaker from audio device manager on the system tray volume icon
still doesnt work then uninstall the driver for sound card from device manger
restart the computer
still no then do a system recovery

plz check in device manger the sound driver is installed or not, if there is yellow question or explanation mark then you have to reinstall the driver for the sound, if there is no mark in the device manger then check the volume controller if it is muted. post back if required

We have a picture but no sound on the laptop. Is it a case of the sound hardware been accidentally deleted from the laptop or has it just been turned off.

go to start>>control panel>>sound and audio devices
under the volume tab. see if you have a audio device install. if it is install, you should be abel to control the volum and make sure uncheck the mute button box.
if you don't see the aufio device, then you have to install the device.
go to control panel>>system>>device manger and see what type of audio device is listed.
if you can't fine it. check on manufacture web site to get the audio device and driver.
