Newer machines will eject the water so fast that older home plumbing may be too small to keep it from overflowing. We had no choice but to pay a plumber to install a larger drain to use the new HE washer I bought to replace my old one when the transmission went out. Then I had to fix the drywall after he ran new PVC to the larger drain further down the wall. I suggest asking how big of a hole they are going to make, and being prepared to fix that too.

You may have a drain line restriction causing it to back up. Pull the drain hose up about 6 inches and try it again. If it does overflow again, you will need to call a plumber to clear the drain line out in your plumbing.

Washer empties faster than pipes allow causing overflow

More then likely you have a partial clogged drain also, New washer output is alot faster, Being a plumber its not getting enough air to let it drain properly. Check drain for clog and vent is wrking properly

Your problem is not with the washing machine. I suspect that the drain line for your toilet is obstructed further down the line than your snake can reach. If you have a clean out riser to your sewer system, flush the toilet while someone else is watching the flow past the clean out. I would say that renting a sewer line snake at a tool rental like Home Depot would solve your problem. Good luck

Drain pipe for washer overflows..how do I clear it out?

if the water is coming up from the drain it means your drain is restricted you either need a plumber or you have to run a plumbers snake down the drain to clean it outl.

Was the water coming from the drain line, or the washer? A timer switch wouldn't cause the drain line to overflow. If the timer were defective, the washer would not advance properly, get stuck on a cycle, or not run at all. I may be wrong, but I haven't seen a timer that causes an overflow. The water level is controlled by a pressure switch that shuts the water inlet valves off after the water reaches the reqiuired level. If you click on the link below, I have a posting explaining the minimum requirements for washing machine installations. See if your installation meets these basic requirements.

The drain line needs to be sufficient enough to allow 17 gallons per minute of water to drain properly. You might still have a slow drain issue somewhere further down the line causing the drain to back up. In addition, if the drain hose was fitting tightly in the standpipe, this tells me that the diameter of the pipe may also be too small. this may also contribute to slow drain problems.

Please read the post and let me know what you decide. I don't think the appliance repairman is in order, maybe a plumber(?). I hope this helps you. Post back if you have further questions/concerns.

Washer won't fill up

The problem is most likely your drain. If there is no air break at the drain,( a gap where the hose goes into the pipe so air can enter) Your water will siphon out of the machine. Also make sure your drain pipe is higher than the tub of your washer and you only want about 6 inches of the drain hose sticking into the pipe. If you have water coming back out of the pipe when the machine drains, you will need a plumber to clean the pipes or replumb the drain. New washers pump out faster than older ones did and they need a good drain to handle the flow.

Water overflowing from drain pipe

The problem with the new washing machines, is that they dump 20-22 gallons of water in 4-5 seconds. This amount is far more than the garden hose test will submit the drain to. Here are a number of solutions, I hope that one of these will help you.

#1 As mentioned above, you can restrict the flow of the drain pipe. I recommend a 3/4" x 6" brass nipple, or a 1/2" x 6" brass nipple, depending on your specific situation. The brass nipple will not corrode like a galvanized nipple.

#2 There is also a rubber cap that you attach to the drain pipe that fits around the drain hose tightly.

#3 Some situations might require that you have to raise your drain pipe. It is recommended that it be at least 36". This allows for gravity to assist the drain.

#4 Some situations will require that the drain pipe be increase in diameter. Older plumbing applications were installed using 1 1/2" piping. With the newer washing machine discharge volume, the 1 1/2" pipes will not support the discharge. Your drain line will need to be changed to 2". This option will be one of the more costly fixes, depending on the amount of line that needs to be changed.

#5 Some plumbing installations installed without a p-trap will need to be changed. The p-trap keeps sewer gas from coming back into the house. It also allows for a smooth transition into the drain line. Any restrictions in the drain line (i.e. ells, tees,) will cause the soap in the gray water to foam up which will cause the drain line to slowly back up.

I hope these solutinons help.
