The programme selector knob keeps turning. We have tried the troubleshooting it suggests in the instruction manual, but this has not fixed it. We've also checked the brushes and band etc. Any suggestions on what the fix may be, before we call in the repairman...

You can choose the right programme for any type of laundry following the descriptions on the washing programme tables (see «Washing Programmes»).
Turn the programme selector dial to the required programme. The programme selector determines the type of washing cycle (e.g. water level, drum movement, number of rinses) and the washing temperature according to the type of laundry.
The pilot light of button 8 starts blinking.
The selector dial can be turned either clockwise or anticlockwise. Position "0" to Reset programme/ Switching OFF of the machine. At the end of the programme the selector dial must be turned to position "0", to switch the machine off.
If you turn the programme selector dial to another programme when the machine is working, the yellow pilot light of button 8 will blink 3 times and the message Err is displayed on the display to indicate a wrong selection. The machine will not perform the new selected programme.

To enter diagnostics:

Press and hold down START/PAUSE and any one of the option buttons simultaneously
Holding down both buttons switch the appliance on by turning the programme selector one position to the right (clockwise)
Continue to hold down the START/PAUSE and option buttons until the LED begins to flash (at least 2 seconds)
In the first selector position, the operation of the buttons and the relative Led's is checked; turning the selector knob clockwise activates the diagnostics cycle for the operation of the various components and displays any alarm conditions.
No it is not a faulty switch, it is the selector switch going round because of another fault on the washer, it is usually associated with a faulty control module.
Check your handbook and see if there nis a reset point on the selector switch dial, usually marked with one or more solid black dots.
Hope this helps.
I had exactly the same problem, found the answer on another website. The filter had a small sock stuck in it, stoppin the ppump from turning and draining the water out. Lever off the front panel right at the bottom of the washine machine, then unscrew the round black plug, lots of water will come out. Pull out the black thing and stick you fingers inside and pull out watever is blocking the pump. Turn off the electrics first. Mine now works fine again. :)
