Question about Sony (SDX-460VRB) (SDX460VRB) AIT Tape Drive

1 Answer

SDX-460V drivers installed, drive gets picked up in device manager (XP). However, drive is not seen in explorer/my computer and trying to run XP backup. program sees AIT-1 but I get message "There is no free media available with the selected type. Add unused media or click Cancel to end the operation. Note: it may take up to 60 seconds to recognize new media." I have waited minutes with no result. How do I get my system to recognize the tape drive so I can back up.

Looks like I have all the drivers right for the tape drive. still no way I can see the drive.....

  • Bert Carmody Oct 15, 2010

Firm ware is installed and up to date. Drivers are the latest. You ask a very good question about product software. The only software is the Sony TapeTool which does work. Should I see specific software on the list or is it that they ship with 3rd party software...which I do not have and do not see on the list.

It's when I try to back up through Windows back-up I get the " There is no free media available with the selected type. Add unused media or click Cancel to end the operation. Note: it may take up to 60 seconds to recognize new media."

Shouldn't I see this drive in Windows Explorer or My Computer at the desktop/drive level? Seems to me that I should.

Sorry to sound so befuddled and clueless,,,,

Good comments...the tape drive is out there and identified but I still cannot get the back-up command to work. I continue to get that error message media available.....

    Any other suggestions?

For your information, I did a google search on the error message (no free media available - sony) and found some good answers at

All documents pointed to my using the 8mm AIT1 drive and after trial and error (a whole lot of error), I figured out that this was incorrect. The destination that made this work was 8mm AIT and the backup process started right away.

You kept asking me questions which worked to eliminate the obvious and less obvious items and then I stumbled onto this.

I'm sure you will get this answer from others and please feel free to use it!

    Thanks for your help!

Appreciate your asstance!

First things I'd check are to make sure I'm using the latest firmware, driver, and software from Sony.

You can find everything HERE.

Please confirm you're using all the latest stuff and we'll go from there.

So the firmware is the latest version too, right?

And you've also installed the latest software (not driver) too?

I've never used a Tape Backup before but you probably need to register the media in removable storage panel.

Right-Click - My Computer - Manage, Storage, Removable Storage.

Let me know if this does the trick.

It is always a good idea first to check the Disk Management before the Device Manager.
  1. Right-click on My Computer.
  2. Click on Manage.
  3. Choose Disk Management from the left column.
  4. Try to find the external drive in the lower window. It should be "Disk 1" or some other number (but not Disk 0).
  5. If it is displayed there, you can troubleshoot it inside the Disk Management (for XP/2000) (for Vista)(for Windows 7). If not, continue on.
  6. Then choose Device Manager from the left column.
  7. Choose Disk drives.
  8. If the drive is not seen there, check under Universal Serial Bus Controllers (if the drive is connected via USB). The drive should appear as a USB Mass Storage Device.
  9. If a yellow ! icon is displayed next to it, double-click on the drive.
  10. A Properties window will appear and will probably say "This device is not working properly" and will give either (Code 28) or (Code 10).
  11. If Code 10 appears, the drive has most probably failed. Verify by trying the drive with another USB cable or port, or on another computer.
If the drive does not work on the 2nd computer, the drive is probably defective. You can begin a replacement request at our Warranty Services Page.
  12. If Code 28 appears, you will need to test the drive on another computer.

I pulled a jumper off sli motherboard my cd rom is not reading disks alienware alx

Assuming you can eject disks, and the drive is appearing in my computer / windows explorer, check the SATA (usually red) cable connected between your drive and motherboard, If it is correctly connected try using another SATA port on your motherboard, if that doesnt work you can try going into the bios (usually by pressing delete as it is booting) then checking to see if the drive is being detected, you should see it in SATA devices, and also in your boot menu. If it isnt there its a hardware problem.. replace cables, try using the SATA port from one of your Hard drives.

If the drive is in showed in bios, and
is not appearing in my computer / windows explorer, go into control panel, system, hardware, device manager (if using XP, other versions of windows also have device manager) if there is a yellow question mark next to the dc/dvd drive, run the installation cd for your drive, or right click, update driver, run through the wizard selecting the location where you saved the drivers.

If it is installed correctly, and you have tried numerous disks, making sure they are not dvd's if its a cd drive, the you can try downloading the bios file from the manafacturers website and updating following their instructions

Please check if your HDD is visible in storage management. You must be logged on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group view and modify most properties and perform most computer-management tasks.

To start and use Computer Management on the local computer:
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.

The Computer Management window for the local computer is displayed. "Computer Management (Local)" is displayed at the root of the console tree.
  2. In the console tree, expand System Tools, Storage
Then check if your USB HDD is visible under one of next options. This is for windows XP.
If it will be presented there try to right click on this drive and format hard drive. Also please recheck your jumper position. This picture might be very useful c33351b.gif

DVD drive not seen in Explorer on HP DV8000

If you right click My Computer /Manage/
1. Look at Device Manager. Do you see any "!" marks by anything.....maybe your drive.
2. Look in Disk Management. Do you see the drive there? Have you added any USB or other drives to your PC recently? If so, it could have taken the place of your drive's letter. You may need to change the drive letter.

Microtek Scanner installation issue

If running XP SP2, then try clicking Start > right click My Computer > properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager button > expand Imaging devices > right click on your Microtek ScanMaker > uninstall > Re boot > and let XP pick up the device and let the found hardware wizard configure it.

I have seen plenty of hardware that when following the devices manufacturer's instructions for install, such problems as you're having occur and XP SP2 usually will cure it, though you may still need the device manufacturer's CD (for the driver) in your optical drive.

This link: will allow you to select between the 5950 and 5950 Pro then on the next page you will be able to download the latest XP driver for your Scanmaker among drivers for other Operating Systems also.

I hope this helps, and Good luck.

Is my web cam bust?

If you are using XP SP2, the drivers of the webcam should be installed automatically after connecting the webcam to the usb port.

Try this, connect the webcam to the usb port. Go to DEVICE MANAGER(how to go to device manager--------go to control panel, at classic view Click System, click Hardware, Click Device Manager. In the Device manager page you should see a YELLOW QUESTION MARK if the webcam is detected by your computer. If this is the case your webcam is ok, you just need drivers for the device.

To check for drivers:

1:insert webcam cd to pc, open my computer
2:right click your cdrom drive, click explore. You should see the setupexe folder and another folder for drivers. You need the drivers to make your webcam work. Download drivers from the website of your webcam then try to install it.
