Question about GE Profile PSS26NGS Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

We packed our freezer full. The ice in the ice maker melted and the freezer compartment no longer cooled. Emptied it all out and removed frozen ice from back side. Now it appears to work again. What gives? This sort of happened before but not as badly. Manual claimes you can pack it full because of the air tower in the rear.

Hi Nancy,

I bet you've got all kinds of frost / ice behind the plastic cover that protects (and shields from view) the cooling coil in the freezer compartment.

You probably have one or more: defrost timer, defrost terminator or defrost heating element that has failed. Call for service - or empty the fridge and unplug with door open for a day - ice will melt and when you plug in again it will work just fine. Until frost builds up again that is.

Good luck!

Freezer side is freezing and refrigerater is warm

You have an Iced up freezer there...is the freezer "packed full of stuff?" If so you are blocking all of the vents that cool the fridge...The freezer section of a refrigerator is responsible for keeping the freezer frozen and the frige cool...air passes between the two compartments via the settings you set on those dials "a b c etc." Take everything out of the freezer and stick it all in coolers or something for a couple of hours see if there is ice built up around the vents at the sides and bottom of the freezer compartment. If so, the freezer needs to be "de-iced" normally this is accomplished automatically via heaters placed here and there throughout the fridge...So this may also be a source of your problem. if the heating element is bad, it would allow ice to form...I can also assume that the airflow from the fan in the freezer is "weak at best" meaning it is also full of ice... You can melt the ice with a hairdryer and some time of course...but be thorough with it. If you have a heat gun even better, just don't get it too close to the plastic or you will melt it. hope i've helped a bit...let me know what you find in there

I have an LG LFC21770 refrigerator and have noticed a build up of ice on the back wall of the freezer section. Yesterday, when I opened it to get some ice - the ice was frozen but had obviously melted...

If the freezer fails to defrost you get ice building up at the back of the freezer.
The defrost cycle relies in a thermistor transducer to detect the ice build up and to turn on the defrost cycle. The water usually then drips down to a tray under te fridge and then gets evaporated away.
Hopefully you only have a problem with the thermistor and not the defrost circuitry,
This is hard for a repair man to diagnose as when you call them out to your fridge it will be impossible to diagnose if the freezer is totally packed with ice.
And if you let it defrost totally it will be hard to diagnose as they may not be allowed to use freon to cool the transducer.'
So if you call someone in to check this you need to know if the ice build up will be a problem for them .
Youtube has several videos on this situation .

Hi!!

The Ice Maker and the Freezer/Fridge part of the unit work separate, that's why you get the ice made but the freezer can't keep it frozen.

Most likely the condenser, located in the back of the freezer is all frozen and covered with ice pluggin up the air ducts to the fridge, preventing it from cooling.

One quick solution will be unplugging the refrigerator and allowing it to defrost on it’s own or remove the freezer's back panel and using a heat gun or hair dryer to melt the ice, this will take about 20 to 30 min..

There are various reasons this type of problem:

The temp. controls are not set properly. Set controls according to manufacturer recomendation.
The small fan in the freezer is not working,
The defros timer is not working or,
The defrost heater coil is busted.

Once the ice is melted, plug unit back in and check for unit reactions. You should be able to hear the freezer fan working. Also, you'll hear about 4 to 6 times a day the defrost heater melting the ice in the back of the freezer, if NOT, check heater coil for continuity.

Don't forget to rate this post. Good Luck.

Freezer is not defrosting

1. Remove all of the food from inside the freezer and place it into the ice chest. Use more than one ice chest, if necessary. Cover the food with ice from a 10 lb. bag of ice. Alternatively, place all of the food from your freezer into the refrigerator compartment, packed tightly together.
2. Place one or two 10 lb. bags of ice into one or two large bowls inside the refrigerator compartment to keep the food chilled. Keep the door to the refrigerator tightly closed and avoid opening it during the freezer defrosting process.
3. Unplug the unit and leave the freezer door open.
4. Let the freezer defrost overnight or for at least eight hours.
5. Use the towels to wipe up the melted ice.
6. Plug in a hair dryer and direct it to the interior of the freezer to melt any remaining ice from the walls and door. Be sure to direct it into the vents of the freezer, too.
7. Wipe up any water from ice melted with the hair dryer from inside and around the freezer.
8. Plug the freezer back into the outlet, and return food still solidly frozen to the freezer compartment from the ice chest or refrigerator. Use any thawed foods within a day or two or discard.

Remove door and icemaker from bottom freezer model 59673914200 -- icemaker wont turn

The ice maker switch had come unattached due to excess ice buildup, and frozen to the ice pack. The ice in the ice maker had also frozen into a solid block due to not being able to rotate. After removing the drawer trays and protecting the frozen food, turning off the refridgerator, I used a hair drier to melt and remove the ice from the ice maker, gave it time to dry out, -- No gears wer stripped,- the ice maker now works normally.

Water coming out of the freezer compartment into main unit

I believe the drain is blocked behind the panel wall inside freezer. You will need to unplug the refrigerator and remove panel and inspect drain at bottom of evaporator. There is a tray with a drain hole on the low end. Also check around area that water enter from back of refrigerator to ice maker. Let me know what you find, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Amana BX22A2W - freezer works, fridge not cooling

Same problem here with an Amana refrigerator with the freezer on the bottom. I removed the back panels and vacuumed dust and cat hair out. The back panel in the freezer was frosted over with ice on the bottom. I removed the shelves and food and used a hairdryer to loosen the panel. The ice maker made it harder to remove the plastic panel so I pulled it back and saw the cooling fins frozen solid. I used the hairdryer to melt the ice and a shop vacuum to collect the water. It works like new again.

Icemaker issue: cubes melting at the bottom causing water leak out the front

J, sounds like your dispensor flapper is not closing properly and you are drawing warm air up into the ice bucket. This model had an issue where the flapper pin holder was part of the housing and would break off. They have a kit now that fixes that problem. The only other thing it could be would be low freezer temps or it's staying in defrost too long. With out being there, I would start with the dispensor flapper. Check it out and post back.. Catriver.
