If you have a spare USB flash drive lying around, you could try using http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ with the ISO image. Then, hit F11 while the 2950 is booting and you should be able to select the flash drive.

If that doesn't work, see if you can find updated firmware for your DVD-ROM on http://support.dell.com or if it's an aftermarket install go to the OEM's support site.

Failing that, maybe try different media. If you're burning to a CD-R, try a different brand (and avoid CD-RW discs.) If you're using a DVD-R, try a DVD+R.

Good luck!

there's no option to select boot from USB in the boot menu.. I do have the orginal dell install disk but no update ulitity..have you heard why this would be happen to a DVD rom

  • cuncator Oct 15, 2010

Double check the BIOS, make sure the USB ports are enabled and the USB Flash Drive Emulation is set to auto. See:http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/sy...

I've heard certain burnable media won't play nice with DVD/CDRW drives without a firmware update, especially if it's an older drive with newer media. Something about the color of the dye used. Have you tried an external CD/DVD drive?

My dvd rewriteable drive does not read cd discs but only dvds, and it does not burn neither dvd or cd even though i have the proper burning tool.

what sort of burning software are you using it might be because you have not selected to burn data or an iso

http://www.majorgeeks.com/BurnAware_Free_d5839.html
BurnAware Free is one of the most popular free CD, DVD, Blu-ray Disc burning software available for Windows.
Using this program you can easily create and burn Audio and MP3 CD, Data and DVD-Video disc, ISO and Cue Image,
erase or format rewritable disc, copy your CD or DVD to ISO image

that seems strange if it reads dvd's it should read cd's

Click start control panel administrive tools computer management device manager scroll to cd/dvd rom drives right click properties then properties again then tick enable cd digital cd audio for this cd rom device or scroll to dvd regions select the no _ for your specific area
If this does not fix the problem you might try
Click start control panel administrive tools, computer management, device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question mark ? right click you will have options to update driver, roll back driver,or select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer
Close all open programs

Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter
Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

SYSTEM

CurrentControlSet

Control

Class

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

Upper Filters

Lower Filters

Upper Filters.bak

Lower Filters.bak

If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer

Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone. or
you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd then plug them back this should activate the found new hardware wizard or

you might have to uninstall then restart your computer then reinstall your DVD/CD then reinstall the driver for this device
if your computer came with a motherboard disk the drivers could be on it
click start control panel administrive tools computer management device manager scroll down cd dvdrom drives if you see a yellow question or exclamation mark?! or a red x right click you will need to update the driver or
select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver
hope this helps

Trying to set-up striped array. When loading operating system sata drivers are required. Where can I find these

While the computer is booting up from the CD/DVD, you are presented with a message saying: "Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver....". If you press F6 at this stage, you will be able to install the required SATA drivers.

Another way is to make an ISO image of your OS installation disc & slipstream your SATA drivers into that ISO image using nLite, then burn the modified ISO image back on a CD/DVD & boot the system using this CD/DVD. This way, you will be able to load the SATA drivers without pressing F6. This will be installed automatically.

Check the following link for more details:
http://www.ehow.com/how_5117088_install-party-scsi-raid-driver.html

You can download nLite at the following link:
http://www.nliteos.com/download.html
After downloading the installer, install the program & start using it.

The following link describes how to use nLite to slipstraem the SATA drivers into the Windows XP installation CD:

I Wanted To Make a BOOT CD For Windows XP But The Problem is That I Have Windows Vista and i Dont Know What To Do So What Can i Do

How to make a bootable Windows Vista ISO DVD media
  1. Put all 3 downloaded files (namely install.wim, boot.wim and an executable X13-49120.exe) in the same folder (for this tutorial, let’s assume the files are put on C:\ else you need to modify the path accordingly).
  2. Run the X13-49120.exe executable. Windows Vista Setup Preparation will create a new folder “Vista” inside the folder and will populate the folder with all necessary Vista setup files which takes up about 2.52 GB disk space.
  3. Exit from the Install Windows screen.
  4. Download CDimage 2.52.
  5. Extract CDimage from CDimage.zip to the C:\ root directory.
  6. Open a command prompt shell, and run the following command: cdimage.exe -lVISTA_EN_DVD -m -u2 -bC:\Vista\boot\etfsboot.com C:\Vista\ C:\Vistax86.iso
Bootable Windows Vista x86 DVD ISO image in UDF format will be created as vistax86.iso in C:\ or any folder you specified above.
  7. Burn the newly create ISO with a CD/DVD burning software such as Nero or Alcohol 120%. Try to burn at low speed (i.e. 4X) and turn on verification to ensure that the DVD creation is fine.
Visit here for illustrative guide on using CDImage GUI version to make the bootable DVD ISO.

Create a Windows Vista ISO image and DVD with Oscdimg
Another possible way to create a bootable Vista ISO and DVD is by using Oscdimg CD-ROM and DVD-ROM Premastering Utility, available via WinPE (Windows Preinstallation Environment) via Business Desktop Deployment 2007 or Windows Automated Installation Kit (AIK).
  1. Complete step 1 – 3 as above.
  2. In the command prompt window, run the following command: oscdimg -bC:\Vista\boot\etfsboot.com -h -u2 -m -lVISTA_EN_DVD C:\Vista\ C:\VistaDVD.iso
A VistaDVD.iso UDF DVD image will be created and can be used to boot the computer from DVD to install Vista.
  3. Burn the ISO image file by using last step above.
Visit the guide to create Vista bootable DVD using vLite.
Note: For 64-bit Windows Vista, download etfsboot.com and put it into “\Vista\boot” folder. Or users using WAIK (WinPE), the etfsboot.com can be found at %Programfiles%\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\amd64\boot\ folder. So simply replace -bC:\Vista\boot\etfsboot.com with -bC:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\amd64\boot\etfsboot.com when making 64-bit Vista DVD image.
