If you've just re-installed your windows/mac on a new/formatted hard drive , or if you have been deleting files from the windows/system
then the odds are you need to re-install the drivers for your on-board audio. OR PCI AUDIO CARD (if installed)
Locate any errors under"sound controllers" in Device Manager and update drivers.

If the drivers cant be found , or if your having trouble locatiing anything in device manager, visit this site here & download Belarc advisor after you run belarc, a page will open listing information about your computer.
Use the Motherboard manufacturer/model id# details to locate audio drivers on the web.
Example

Mthrbd/man Id # is Asus "KTM-XXX42"

search Asus.com for "KTM-XXX42 " audio drivers

NO SOUND OUTPUT

Reasons can be:
1. you have a corrupt driver.in that case uninstall and reinstall the drivers.
2.the device or the driver is not supported by the OS.
3.check whether the speakers are working properly , hold speakers one by one close to your ear while it is on you should hear a hissing sound confirming that they are alright.
4. change the port of the sound card see if that works
5. and if none of the above works it has to be the sound card itself.
think servicing before buying another sound card.

The sound isn't working on my pc. I have checked speakers on a different pc and they work fine. Have you any idea what the problem could be?

Have you checked the sound driver? Does the sound work with headphones?
If the sound driver is correct and working there will be, when checking the sound mixer, moveable virtual slider controls.
If it works on headphones, the headphone socket may be faulty.
The likelyhood of no sound due to a power problem is not very high.

Sound doesn't work. Used to work

You didn't mention which OS you're using but here is the XP driver for your machine. Try a reinstall and see if that fixes your problem.

It's a Realtek driver so you should be able to download a generic driver from the Realtek site which should work also. Choose either the standard Realtek AC97 or the AC97 HD, one of them should work.

New Sound Card is not working.

Ted, the first thing you should do is go into your computer's BIOS and disable the built-in sound card. Once you do that, go back to your device manager and if the onboard sound card still appears there remove or disable it. Then reboot and your new sound card should be recognized and you can install drivers and begin using it.

Sound device not working

Windows XP

START - My Computer (RIGHT CLICK) - Properties - Hardware Tab - Device Manager button - click on the sound, video and game controllers - on the drop down menu you should see sound codec - either right click and UPDATE DRIVER - or delete sound codec’s and restart, XP will install suitable sound drivers.

If that doesn’t work then try installing sound drivers from the computer manufacturer.
If you have a big X on the sound codec or your third party drivers than it’s a hardware issue.

If replacing the drivers’ doesn’t work then it's a hardware issue. If you have onboard sound card then you will need to replace the mother board. I hope it's under warranty.
