Question about Porter Cable C2002 150 Psi 6 Gal Compressor

The compressor will not shut off when it reaches top pressure, over 150 psi. The hose from the head to the tank gets too hot to touch.

ASSUMING THIS IS AN ELECTRIC MOTOR DRIVEN SINGLE STAGE COMPRESSOR, IF THE COMPRESSOR USES OIL IN THE CRANKCASE, THE PRESSURE SWITCH SHOULD CUT OFF AT 125 PSI AS THE ACT OF COMPRESSION HEATS THE AIR QUITE HOT. THERE IS ALWAYS SOME OIL THAT PASSED THE PISTON RINGS IN THE COMPRESSED AIR. IF THE COMPRESSED AIR GETS HOT ENOUGH, THE OIL VAPOR CAN IGNITE AND THE FLAME CAN CARRY TO THE TANK FOR AN IMPRESSIVE EXPLOSION. THIS ORDINARILY DOES NOT HAPPEN BELOW 175PSI OR MORE.

OILLESS COMPRESSORS CAN BE SET TO 150 PSI. WITH EITHER TYPE OF COMPRESSOR, THE HOSE SHOULD BE ATTACHED TO THE REGULATOR OR THE REGULATOR STACK, NEVER TO THE COMPRESSOR, AS THE COMPRESSED AIR LOSES MUCH OF ITS HEAT WHILE IN THE RECEIVER. IF THE WHOLE TANK IS GETTING HOT ENOUGH TO MELT A PROPERLY ATTACHED HOSE, YOU HAVE A DANGEROUS SITUATION, CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE PRESSURE SWITCH, UNLOADER VALVE AND RELIEF VALVE. THE RELIEF VALVE SHOULD OPEN AT NO MORE THAN 150 PSI, THE UNLOADER VALVE OPENS WHEN THE PRESSURE SWITCH SHUTS THE MOTOR OFF, AND SHOULD ONLY HISS FOR A FEW SECONDS AS IT DUMPS THE PRESSURE ONLY IN THE COMPRESSOR AND THE LINE FROM THE COMPRESSOR TO THE TANK INLET CHECK VALVE. Why does the safety valve go off before the pressure switch on a porter cable 80 gal air compressor


The maximum pressure on most small compressors is 10 bar or 1000kpa which is about 145 psi in the old language most safety valves are set to 150 psi. I suggest you get some one to reduce the pressure switch setting. Running a compressor at elevated pressures does not give you any more air. A reasonable pressure for small compressors is 120 psi

If it is building up to the full rated pressure and there are no air leaks in the hoses then it is most likely the pressure switch. It is item 111 in this parts diagram.

I have a C2001-WK that does not auto shut off


A regulator controls the pressure in the air line leaving the compressor and does not affect when the compressor turns on or off.

The pressure switch monitors the pressure in the tank and turns the compressor motor on and off when the switch closes or opens in response to changes in the tank pressure. If the compressor does not shut off, it is possible the pressure switch has been set to a pressure level that is higher than the compressor is capable of attaining, thus it does not shut off.

The compressor is capable of developing 150 psi and is noted as having a "120 psi cut-in pressure". When you say it doesn't shut off, does that mean it will generate 150 psi or more of pressure and fails to shut off or it develops less than 150 psi and does not shut off.

If the compressor does not generate 150 psi, then it is probably somewhat worn out and not capable of developing enough pressure to meet the factory high pressure limit. I would try adjusting the pressure switch upper pressure limit down to 130 psi or less (less if the compressor will not develop 130 psi) and see if this solves your problem If it doesn't,

If the compressor will develop 150 psi or more, then try adjusting the high pressure limit to less than 150 psi. If you can't adjust the high pressure limit then the pressure switch is defective and needs to be replaced.

The pressure regulator on an air compressor is designed to let the pump motor run until the pressure in the tanks reaches their safe level. While you are using the air the pressure drops in the tanks until it reaches the level where the pressure switch turns the motor on again and refills the tanks to their rated level. The pressure where these two things happen is usually with in ten psi above or below the rated levels because few regulators are so precise and are affected by temperature that they turn and off exactly at the rated pressures. If a pressure regulator is damaged or broken it is possible for the tank to either reach unsafe high levels or not turn on when the pressure drops to where it should restart the motor. If you are in doubt, have the regulator checked or replaced as overpressured tanks are very dangerous.

Dewalt emglow 2gal compressor will not reach cut out pressure


This usually means you have a problem with the piston & cylinder assembly or with the valve plate. If the piston ring or cylinder is damaged, it will compress some air but as the tank pressure rises more and more air will leak past the piston. If the reed valves on the valve plate are bent, warped or broken the same will happen. It's easy to check them for damage by removing the head but Emglow parts are getting harder and harder to find.

Repair all leaks to get true test of condition of cylinder / piston ring and check/reed valves. It is reccommended to know amount of time to fill tank when new and compare this time to present. Filling time is indication of wear. Another method to discover wear is to remove cover to pump and examine condition of cylinder wall close to top of cylinder (on oil-less models). If you see scratches on cylinder, air is leaking past piston seal. On pumps that use oil, very hot discharge air hose or pump head is indication of leaking valves or head gasket. When a compressor reaches set pressure, there should be a release of air from discharge hose thru the unloader. This release of air unloads the compressor head pressure. The unloader is usually located within the pressure switch. Easy to check. Follow discharge hose from compressor head to tank. There should be a brass/steel checkvalve at the tank. The checkvalve allows air to enter tank, however not allow air to be released back into discharge hose. If this valve is leaking, air will be released from the unloader constantly. Follow 1/4" tubing from checkvalve to unloader and listen for leaks. Repair as needed. If air is not leaking from checkvalve then check unloader mechanism with-in pressure switch. Drops compressiom from 120-60 psi after 3 new pressure switches


When the pressure switch fails the comperssor will overpressure to the point of safety release at about 150 - 160 psi. It sounds as if your compressor is not producing enough pressure to cycle off at 120 and just keeps running. This happens when air is leaking from fittings or worn cylinder / reed valves. Don't worry, with some simple tests we will find the actual problem. I am assuming that your compressor is oilfree type. If there are leaks the compressor may not reach set pressure. I use soapy water on all connections and on the head/headvalve (remove plastic covers to get to all parts that may leak) while compressor is running. Make repairs as necessary. If still low pressure, while compressor is running and has reached max obtainable pressure (in your case 60 lbs), carefully place finger over intake port hole (remove filter). If the compressor is pumping normally but leaking there will be ample suction at intake and cause the compressor to speed-up when intake is obstructed with finger. If you feel plenty of suction and no visible (soapy water) leaks, then the problem is probably the cylinder /ring is not correctly seating /scratched and air is leaking past cylinder. Make sure that the cylinder /piston ring is properly aligned and that the lip on the vinyl ring is up toward the head. On oilfree compressors you can examine the cylinder by pushing the piston all the way up, then look for scratches neer top of cylinder. If scratched, pressure is leaking past cylinder, install cylinder kit. If you do not feel suction but rather air blowing out of the intake, (do this test when tank has reached 60 psi) then the problem is the headvalve plate/reed valves are leaking. The reeds must seal perfectly on their seats and not be bent or have obstruction. Replace as necessary. If reeds or headgasket is leaking the discharge air will be very hot. Only one other thing to check and that is the intank check valve. Easy to check. Run compressor till you have about 50+ lbs in the tank then unplug compressor. Carefully loosen the inlet hose at checkvalve and listen for air leaking out of tank. (check valve is the brass valve at tank) If leaking replace checkvalve. Use caution when removing head to try and save the gaskets. If you have oil type pump, and no air leaks (soapy water test) suspect reed valves/valve plate.
