A) What is wrong?;
Your Backlight has gone bad, or the Inverter.

B) How do I fix it?
Replace the Backlight bulb, or the Inverter

C) Backlight bulb's, and Inverters, like everything have a 'lifespan'
This one is at the end of it's. (Stating the Backlight or the Inverter

From here all I can give you is Generic information, since I do not have the laptop manufacturer name, and Model Number. This is on the bottom of the laptop.

1) An LCD screen cannot produce enough light by itself. A Backlight bulb, (Or more than one), is used to emit enough light.

2) A laptop cannot produce enough power to power the LCD screen, and is also used for power to the Backlight.

I'll have to discuss the way the Display Assembly is put together, and name parts in order to explain the following of how to repair. Again, generic information.

1a) The plastic top of the laptop is the Top Cover. There are different names used by different manufacturers.

1b) Looking at the LCD screen with the laptop open, there is a plastic frame that goes around the edges of the LCD screen, and is in Front.
This is the Display Bezel

1c) The LCD screen is behind the Display Bezel. The LCD screen is a composite of layers. The outside layer that faces you is a protective screen.
Around these layers composing the LCD screen, is a metal frame.
One side, (Or both sides) of the metal frame is removed to access the Backlight bulb.

1d) The Backlight bulb is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.
Very similar to the fluorescent lamps, (Bulbs) uses in residential, and commercial applications, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

Now to show you generic laptop info on replacing the Backlight bulb for them.

A) http://www.insidemylaptop.com/category/backlight/

B) http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2007/12/09/replace-laptop-backlight-ccfl-lamp/

If I had the laptop manufacturer name, and Model Number, I could try to give you a link to the Service Manual for the laptop. (Free. Usually from the laptop manufacturer)
This way you would have Exact info on how to disassemble your laptop's Display Assembly.

    Edit:
"2) A laptop cannot produce enough power to power the LCD screen, and is also used for power to the Backlight."
An Inverter is used for this purpose.

Okay! Expert moderator going 0 for 0.

After the Display Bezel is removed you will also see the Inverter. It's below the LCD screen.

Not an advertisement, just one example of a seller for Inverters,

One for a seller of Backlight Bulbs,

[ Remove ALL power to the laptop.
    AC adapter (Charger) and Battery.
    Observe Anti-Static Precautions ]

Screen went black faint images

Hello,
If the screen went black and you can still see faint images of what your computer is currently showing, the typical issue would be a burnt out backlight. For the repair cost, I'd say just invest in a new monitor.
Just to cover the bases, make sure your brightness and contrast settings on the LCD are not set to zero.

Screen on my compact laptop went black and I can only turn it on but have nothing but black

If the laptop comes on normally otherwise and is booting to Windows (you hear the normal startup sounds), look closely at the display and see if you can make out a faint image. It often helps to shine a flashlight on the display.

If the display is faint but present, you probably have a bad inverter board in the display. The inverter provides power for the display's backlight, and without the light the display still works but you can't see it. Inverter boards are available for most brands, they're not usually very expensive, and changing one isn't too difficult. A Web search for your brand and model and "replacement inverter" should turn up several sources. There are also YouTube videos showing how to replace the inverter in many kinds of laptops.

It's also possible the backlight itself is bad. If so, replacing the display is usually preferable to trying to replace the light. The light is built into the display and it's very difficult to replace without damaging the part or the display in the process. The display can be expensive, though.

If you're not sure that the computer is working, try starting it with an external monitor connected. If there's no display then, there's something wrong with the system board that's preventing the machine from starting up. Get that fixed, and it will probably fix the display trouble as well.

The laptop turns on, but the screen stays black

If you can shine a light into the screen and faintly make out the images? Then it's probably the inverter/backlight board, not too expensive or difficult to replace in most cases. Let us know.

Faint image in the background.

Hi Nate,
The same thing has happened to me before.
Well, once you drop your laptop a lot of things could go wrong. From a broken driver to a cracked screen. I believe you broke your bulb. And the cells of your laptop are kinda messed up we can say. Yes, this is fixable but will take time. I hope everything goes better!!

Good Luck

Screen goes black but have faint image in background

Does it boot up as bright as it used to be and then go faint or has it recently only been faint?
If it's the latter it sounds as though the lamp has gone. This can be fixed more often than not, but can be a bit expensive.
Is the laptop still under warrenty? If so go back to the manufacturer or if not you should take it into a computer shop to get a quote on fixing it.

Toshiba laptop

First test is hold a flashlight at an angle to the screen to see if there is a faint image. If you can see the image with the light then the problem is with the laptop's display, either the backlight went out or the inverter is bad.

Second test is to hook an external monitor by VGA cable. Image should be complete and in full color if the onboard video card is functioning.

Please post comment with results for more direction.

It's all black

If you power it on, take a flashlight and shine it on the lcd at and angle and look real close to see if you can see a faint image. If you can, then your backlight in the screen is not working.
Also, you can attatch an external monitor to it, while its off, then power it on and see if it lights the external monitor. Try that and let me know your results.
If you get a picture ok on the external, and you can see a faint image on the lcd using a flashlight, then it could be the backlight inverter board or the bulb itself inside the lcd went out.
If you don't get any picture at all, using an external monitor and can't see a faint image on the lcd using a flashlight, then I would say there's other problems with the laptop itself. Could be a mainboard problem, power issue, etc..
