It is actually not remove the face plate, just the thru bolts. Once all 4 are released turn the whole pump in the direction required and reinstall the thru bolts.

Waterway model # pf-50-2n22c

The wet end of pumps come off this way.

  • Remove the face plate of the pump.
  • Put a large flat-head screw driver on the back of the motor on the shaft going thru the motor.
  • Grasp the impeller (with the screw driver in place on the back of the motor) and unthread the impeller counter clockwise.
  • If it doesn't unthread you will need to bust it off
  • On the back of the motor you will find 4 small bolts 1/4" size that run all the way through the motor and thread into the four fingers of the wet end.
  • Unthread those 4 bolts and you can then remove the volute from the motor.

How could I remove the impeller to rotate the discharge.

You do not to to remove anything on the pump end to rotate it. Loosen the 4 motor thru-bolts at the end opposite the pump; they pass all the way thru the motor into the pump bracket. Once those are backed out you can spin the pump discharge into the position you need and reinstall the thru-bolts...done!

How do you remove the impeller from the motor shaft?

If the shaft seal has been leaking the impeller stem may have split due to corrosion. This makes it very hard to un thread the impeller. After removing the face plate, try sliding a screwdriver into the front of the motor thru the vents. You should be able to seize the armature from turning by doing this. Then use a large channel lock wrench and try and un screw the impeller CCW. If this doesn't work you have to break the impeller off. See my previous post.

Impeller replacement

The spacer plate (called a wear ring) should indeed be installed between the front plate and the impellor. The wear ring should be installed the correct way around, with the flat face against the front plate. Assuming that you're fitting the front plate correctly each time (it only fits on one way) there shouldn't be any issues. I can only assume that you have either fitted the incorrect impellor or it hasn't been tightened fully onto the motor shaft.

Hope this helps,
Ian Kime.

How do i remove impellor

The impeller in my 4 HP, 2-speed Waterway Executive High Performance 56 pool & spa pump has a brass coupling embedded in the back side. This coupling can be unscrewed from the motor shaft by keeping the shaft from rotating while turning the impeller in the reverse direction. Then the seal can be tapped out.

Execetive 56 4hp pump

Looking at the face of the pump, the impeller unscrews by turning it counterclockwise. Also, for some strange reason, the 4HP pump gets a 3HP impeller; the rating is embossed, in very small letters, near the center of the impeller. The 3HP impeller part number is: 310-4200.
Be sure to change the seal: US Seal P/n: PS-1000.
