Can't stream media through xbox 360 using WMP11

Xbox support can't even seem to help me on this one. I am running a XP SP2 computer. I have done all the steps to share media through windows media player 11 to my xbox 360. I did the library > sharing. Ports are open. Wireless network is working fine, but when I go to the media blade and hit one of the three media types my computer still does not show. There are three computers connected to my network, the only one that pops up on the media blade is one running vista (which isn't the one I need) If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

The other two are other people I live with who are connected to the same network I am. Getting rid of them is out of the question and I don't see how that would change my current situation.

I decided to try something, so I brought my laptop up, runs vista, shared along with the other vista computer and they both share flawlessly. I'll try turning sharing off on both of them but I've actually tried this with both of those computers off and it still didn't work.

I had the same problem in Windows XP and I just created a workgroup to share files on the network. Follow these steps if anyone is still having this problem. My gf has vista and must do it automatically but it's just a matter of remembering to establish a workgroup.

To summarize:
- Enable sharing on WMP 11 --> This should adjust windows firewall automatically but be sure to unblock ports for other firewalls, if need be.
- Create a workgroup --> Start...Control Panel....Network setup wizard.
Follow the steps, if you're connectnig through a router, select "this computer connects through a residentail gateway", apply this to any other computers that want to share files on this network, if necessary.
Restart computer to let the workgroup settings take effect and voila...your computer will now be detected.

Block the share option on the Vista computer and try to setup sharing to the xbox once more.

I wanna use a phone line to get the internet and the music off my laptop to connect to my xbox 360...?

Phone line? As in dial up? No dice. You need, atleast, a DSL connection or faster to get Xbox live.

You can use a UPnP media server, such as TVersity to stream music from your laptop to the 360. What's cool about TVersity is that even though the music you want to play is an unsupported format for your Xbox, it will automatically transcode (make it into something the Xbox 360 can play).

If you have a broadband connection (e.g. DSL, Cable, Sat, etc.) you can have Tversity stream your favorite internet radio stream to your Xbox 360.

Download the latest Windows Media Player, Tversity or These other media servers, install, configure (TVersity is fairly easy to setup), and go look for the Tversity folder in your Music section in the NXE menu.

I wrote a how-to on setting up TVersity here if you need help setting it up.

Hope this helps,
Bill

Can`t stream media to my xbox

Make sure your items are not hidden, try using a different folder, also music and and other forms of media can be in different formats that are not recognized by microsoft. Try with other forms of media. Also next time when you post please be a bit more specific, like step-by-step, that way you might even solve the problem yourself!

Xbox 360-computer?

To connect the Xbox 360 console to this computer, you must be running Windows XP Service Pack 2, Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, or Windows Vista.
To obtain your setup package or instructions for connecting your Xbox 360, select the version of Windows installed on this computer from the following list.
To determine the version of Windows XP Media Center Edition that you are running, follow these steps:
  1. Start Media Center.
  2. On the Settings menu, click General.
  3. Scroll down, and then click About Media Center.
  4. Click Software Version

The version number of Media Center you are running is displayed.
To determine the version of Windows XP that you are running, follow these steps:
  1. On the Start menu, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. On the General tab, under System, look for the version of Windows that you are running.

Media sharing WMP11 networking.

Your settings on your PC may not be set to allow sharing to your 360. The way I do it, is I download windows media player 11, imported my itunes library and my movies I had on my PC and allowed sharing via media player. These steps can be seen in more detail by going to www.xbox.com/pcsetup

wmp11 streaming works upon universal plug and play on your router to direct streaming. I have had this problem too. Maybe people do. I found that upnp on my router was always the problem. Make sure it's enabled, and if you have not restarted your router do that. and after you enable upnp, its a good idea to restart it also. I'd give it a 75% chance its a universal pnp problem. Yet if your port forwarding, you might need to disable it, i dont know, i always just used upnp for simplicity. Finally, double check you have a static ip for your port forwards if you continue on that route.

Xbox 360 modding

You cannot transfer files to the Xbox 360, you can only stream the material eg songs or videos through it. You can put the items you wish to view on a usb memory stick, but again you cannot save them to your XBox 360 only play direct from the device you use to store the videos or music. You will also need XP media centre to use the media extender software, or even better Vista premium, XP home or Pro will not share the material with XBox because it cannot use the extender software.

Viewing pictures from computer

Did you have the same problem with Media Player 10/Media Connect or is this the first time you've tried it? Given that you have the same problem with pictures stored on a USB storage device this may well suggest that you are using an unsupported file format, how are your pictures saved? Try converting or re-saving your pictures, you can find a list of supported formats in your Xbox 360 user guide but JPEG (.jpg) is usually a safe choice.

Information from computer to 360

The only way to watch video files from the computer to the 360 is to stream them, which can only be done if you have Windows Media Center. Even then, the only formats that it would play are DVR-MS, MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and WMV. So if you want to watch movies that are in quicktime, divx, avi formats or any other, you would first have to convert them into the supported formats.
