There is a reset button at the back of the modem where the cables are connected. It's just a small red button that you can press with a tip of a pen.

That recessed red button is the reset button, not restart. Unplug the modem from the power source to restart it.

Error 797

This is usually because the wrong driver is installed for whatever reason.
To resolve this issue, remove the modem, and then restart the computer. When the computer restarts, Windows detects the modem and attempts to install the correct driver for it. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Log on to the computer as administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
  2. Click Start and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Phone and Modem Options.
  4. Click the Modems tab.
  5. In the The following modems are installed list, click the modem that you want to remove, and then click Remove.
  6. Click Yes in response to the "Are you sure you want to remove the selected modem(s) from your system?" message.
  7. Restart the computer.
  8. The Found New Hardware Wizard starts. Follow the instructions in the wizard to reinstall the modem.

My rca dcm425 modem stopped working

Hi, carm243. Thanks for your question.
It sounds like your modem needs to be reset. You want to unplug the AC cord from the back of the modem, wait 15 seconds, plug it back in, and restart your computer so that it can obtain the new information from your modem. Watch the lights on your modem. You want to make sure that the "Internet" light blinks while the modem restarts, but goes steady after you restart the modem.
As long as your modem is functional, that should resolve the problem. If this does not solve the problem, get in touch with your internet provider and, assuming you are renting the modem from them, ask them to send a replacement.
Best of luck!

Easiest thing is to get a router and install that between the Surfboard and the computers.
When you switch over computers, the modem sees a new mac address and it doesn't like it. That's why you have to restart it. The router gives it a permanent mac address and it then serves as many computers as you care to connect. (up to 200 or so!)

How to install?

Turn your cable-modem (or DSL-modem) off.

Use an Ethernet cable to connect from the modem to the 'WAN' (or 'Internet') port on the router.

Use another Ethernet cable to connect from one of the 'LAN' (or 'network') ports on the router to the network-port on your computer.

Connect all the power-supplies.

Turn the modem on, and wait until it's fully restarted.

Turn the router on, and wait until it's fully restarted.

Restart your computer.

You should now have Internet access.

Will not connect to internet

Has it worked in the past, and connected to the internet through the same modem? When I had one of these any time the Internet Connection would hickup I'd have to restart everything in the right sequence. As long as your connections are correct, shut down the Linksys router, by removing the power cord, as well as shutting down your modem. Then restart your modem first and wait until it's all set and ready to go. Then restart your Linksys afterwards so it can find the proper IP Address assigned to your modem. It should connect to the Internet, but you always have to restart the modem first while the Linksys is still off. Also make sure the power is disconnected from your Linksys for at least 30 seconds before powering it back up.

Shuts off...restarts, then runs for a few mins

If the modem is 10 years old then its time to replace it even if it was working fine if not very good to be abreast with the latest technology. The ISP must have tested the lines which must be fine because they keep on upgrading so you need to replace the modem to a latest model.

You will need to assign a different ip address to the modem - Iam assuming that both the router & modem are using the same ipaddress 192.168.1.1? If that is the case, then assign 192.168.1.2 tothe modem.
